Dissertation on Nemanja's churches in Toplica is the first archaeological study of
the monasteries of Nemanja's age. The study is based on the analysis of material
obtained through archaeological research at the two churches, St. Nicholas and the Holy
Virgin in Kursumlija, which are identified as the first Stefan Nemanja’s foundations.
The analysis included all preserved archaeological records and documents from all the
investigations conducted on the sites of these two churches, and a third site called Greek
Basilica in their immediate vicinity (from individual researchers also identified as
Nemanja’s foundation), which was previously almost completely unknown,
unsystematized, and unpublished. Collected material is examined within the context of
known historical events and the data from the written records, as well through the
comparison with other Serbian monasteries (through the archaeological material,
specific elements of spatial organization and monastic architecture, and through... the
burials i.e. funerary ritual).
The methodology of the work was partly determined by the volume and
condition of the material, which were partly misplaced and scattered in archives and
repositories of various heritage protection institutions. This unfortunate situation caused
that the preparatory process included years of collection, classification, identification,
and processing. The largest amount of the portable archaeological material (tens of
thousands of pottery finds and over two thousand objects sorted in inventory) which
provided the base for our investigation comes from the systematic archaeological
excavations conducted during the seventies and the eighties of the twentieth century. By
today's standards these excavations had a number of methodological flaws in excavation
and documenting, which has greatly aggravated our interpretation.
The time frame in which the complexes of the churches were analyzed is
determined by the fact that in all of the three localities are multilayered sites with a long
history (spanning from Late Antiquity to the twentieth century) during which they
significantly changed their character and appearance. The determined cultural horizons
are presented in chronological order, in the same manner for each individual site
whenever it was allowed by the character of the material. Periods prior to the time of
Stefan Nemanja are presented in more general terms than the strata from the medieval
and later periods spanning from the twelfth century to the modern times.
The dissertation chapters have a character of general (introduction, methodology
used in the analysis of material, geographic location, and history of land) and individual
considerations. The latter comprises the chapters dealing with individual churches,
which are presented through historic sources and their interpretations, and through the
history of academic research...
