The thesis is concerned with the reception of patristic thought in the writings of
Thomas Torrance. The primary focus is on the manner the reception occurred
within the context of the relations Torrance establishes between theology and
science. The relation is analyzed from three perspectives: 1) epistemological
concurrence between theology and science; 2) their historical intertwining; 3)
their material concurrence. Firstly, in Chapter 3, analysis covers the model of
scienti ic knowledge which Torrance holds theology shares with science and which
is based on several principles with the principle of objectivity being the main one.
Secondly, Chapter 4 contains the account of historical intertwining between
theology and science which represents the essential topic of the paper given the
signi icance of patristic theology in that regards context. The analysis of the
intertwining is included in the analysis of three concepts that Torrance holds to
have had in luence on the origin and conse...quential development of contemporary
science. The irst concept is that of homoousios. Torrance's interpretation of its
meaning and development is presented in order to point out its signi icance not
only in development of theology but of scienti ic knowledge as well. The concept of
contingency, developed on the grounds of patristic teaching of the creation of the
world out of nothing represents another major idea that provided for basic
principles of experimental research of the nature. The principles include the
following beliefs: that nature is good, that contingent phenomena are not
ontologically de icient, and that the rational order the nature is subject to is also
created being just one of the possibilities. Torrance's understanding of the
signi icance of this concept in contemporary science is presented. As the third
in luential factor of the patristic theology for science, the kataphysical inquiry of
research is presented, the method which Torrance inds in the works of Clement of
Alexandria, Athanasius the Great and John Philoponus. Torrance's understanding of
this method is presented as the foundation of the then as well as the contemporary
science by which epistemological primacy of the object over the subject of research
is established. The end of this Chapter includes analysis of three cases in which
theology enabled the knowledge that concurs materially with the insights of
contemporary science. Finally, along with the resumes and summaries of the
conclusions a review is presented of the positive and negative sides of Torrance's
approach to patristic tradition, as well as the need for continuation of further
creative reading, such as Torrance's, of patristic heritage is deemed relevant.
