Translations of Spanish and Serbian folk poetry are among the most prominent literary
events in British Romanticism. The same most significant translators translated Spanish and
Serbian poems, or they dealt with them in some way. They are Walter Scott, John Gibson Lockhart,
and John Bowring.
The aim of the dissertation is to examine the connections between Spanish and Serbian
folk poetry in British romanticism and the influence on the construction of the cultural model of
the nation, then, by comparing all aspects of importance that include both the translations
themselves, the originals, representations and translators, as well as the broader socio-historical
and cultural context in which the translations were created, as well as the cultural models of Spain
and Serbia that were created based on it. The hypothesis is that translation is an integral part of the
strategy of passive conquest of the border territory, neither in the East nor in the West.
Guided by the complex nature of the... studied phenomena, a comparative and
interdisciplinary framework is proposed that combines the postulates and concepts of natural
philosophy, cultural anthropology, cultural studies and translation studies, cognitive anthropology,
cultural model theory and performative history.
The cultural model of the nation of Spain and Serbia was created as an imagination of the
geopolitical Euro-Oriental peripheries, the Balkan Peninsula under the Ottomans, and the Moorish
Spain. The cultural models are the same, created under the influence of the metanarrative of Europe
and Progress.
Spain and Serbia represent the romantic literary treatment of heterotopia. British literature
of the nineteenth century played a crucial role in creating the image of the barbaric, wild east of
Europe. The examples in this dissertation show that the good savage narrative is active.
Romantics, in an effort to unite imagination and reason, universal and national, classical
and romantic, create the myth of Europe and the "mystique" of the Nation.
