The subject of the research concerns the most famous work of one of the famous English Puritans of the 17th century, John Bunyan (1628-1688), who wrote the first part of The Prilgrim's Progress in 1678, and the second in 1684.
In the theoretical framework of the thesis, researching the question of whether the category of truth can be attributed to literature, we came to the widespread modern belief that fictional or metaphorical truth can indirectly lead to truth that is neither factual nor paradigmatic, and that the truth of Banjan's allegory fits the epistemological model of the truth of a literary work, the subjective theory of knowledge and the ethical model of the truth of a literary work, which confirms the thesis that a literary work can transmit but also introduce philosophical, scientific or religious truths through its fictional world. A comparative method of analysis of the first and second parts of the allegory was used within the synthetic research method which included th...e analysis of intertextual and contextual elements that are relevant for the interpretation.
The dominant influence of the Reformation wave on Banjan's life and work was confirmed by researching the cultural and historical context in which the writer lived and created, as well as by reviewing previous studies of his literary work. Researching the reception of the work showed that The Pilgrim's Progress was included in the literary canon of English literature due to internationalization for missionary purposes, whence Banjan's reputation as a universal writer, which was then attributed to Banjan's skillful depiction of human nature and life struggles in the 20th century. In addition, it was found that the representation of allegory in biblical texts, the role of allegory in the process of interpreting biblical verses, as well as changes in its popularity in theological and literary contexts, influenced the reception of The Pilgrim's Progress.
By analyzing the meaning of the text within its original historical, cultural and literary context, as well as anachronistic meaning, in addition to original religious or theological reading, moral, allegorical, literary, psychological, historical, sociological, political and feminist readings of Banjan's allegory were determined. It has been established that postmodernist emphasis on the plurality of meaning confirmed Banjan's title of transnational and transcultural writer by deconstructing Banjan's fiction through the prism of politics and metafiction, as well as the influence of The Pilgrim's Progress narrative on many english and american writers.
An additional contribution of the dissertation to the future research are the chronological lists of all Banjan's works, film adaptations, as well as editions in English and translations into Serbian that can be found in Serbia.
