The aim of this PhD thesis was the discovery of new biologically active
compounds either by means of natural product isolation from selected plant
taxa or by organic synthesis. All of the either isolated or synthesized
compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods, including one- and
two-dimensional NMR experiments. The specific compounds that were the
subject of this research were: aromatic esters from Ferula ovina (Apiaceae),
octyl esters from Heracleum sphondylium (Apiaceae), diesters of an
oxygenated germacrane derivative from Daucus carota (Apiaceae),
isothiocyanates from Reseda lutea (Resedaceae) and germacrone epoxides
from Geranium macrorrhizum (Geraniaceae). Also, as a part of this
dissertation, a synthesis of new ferrocene-indole hybrids and the investigation
of complex metal hydride reduction of Biginelli compounds was performed.
A number of these compounds were tested for their biological activities
(antimicrobial, cytotoxic, antinociceptive and antiace...tylcholinesterase
activities).
