Predmet doktorske disertacije Morfologija i semantika prideva na -(lj)iv u srpskom
jeziku jesu morfološko-semantičke karakteristike izvedenih, složenih i negiranih prideva
sa sufiksom -iv, -jiv ili -ljiv. Cilj istraživanja je da detaljno i sistematski rasvetlimo
semantiku sufiksa -iv/-jiv/-ljiv i ponudimo preciznije odgovore na relevantna teorijska
pitanja vezana za opšte principe morfologije i semantike u domenu tvorbe prideva i
realizacije modalnih značenja u domenu reči. Osim čisto morfološkog i
ambigvitetom grana u pasivno i aktivno;
2) Sufiks -ljiv/-iv/-jiv poseduje skalarnost, s tim što skala može biti ili binarna
diskretna, ili kontinualna;
3) Motivni glagoli nesvršenog vida imaju tendenciju da motivišu pridev sa čisto
skalarnim značenjem;
4) U situacijama gde je negirani pridev na -(lj)iv u upotrebi, a njegova nenegirana
varijanta nije – razlog za to nije nepostojanje nenegirane varijante, već pragmatičko-
-semantički faktori koji je čine primerenom retkim ili nerealnim kontekstima;
5) Upotreba manje informativnih nenegiranih prideva na -(lj)iv i onih ređe
upotrebljenih od odgovarajućih negiranih oblika ograničena je sintaksičko-semantičkim
okolnostima;
6) Kod složenih prideva na -(lj)iv sufiks -ljiv/-iv/-jiv dodaje se na celu motivnu
frazu.
Rezultati dobijeni na osnovu mera produktivnosti pokazuju da je od tri varijante
sufiksa (-iv, -jiv, -ljiv) najproduktivnije -ljiv u savremenom srpskom jeziku, a nisu u saglasju
The subject of the dissertation Morphology and Semantics of Adjectives Ending in -(lj)iv in the
Serbian Language are the morpho-semantic characteristics of derived, composed, and negated Serbian
adjectives ending in -(lj)iv. The aim of this research is to systematically and in detail analyze the
semantics of the Serbian derivational suffix -ljiv/-iv/-jiv, and, furthermore, to give precise answers to
the relevant theoretical questions regarding the general principles of morphology and semantics in the
domain of adjectival word formation, as well as the questions regarding the realization of modal
meanings in the domain of words. Besides the morphological and (formal) semantic approach, the
morpho-phonological, morpho-syntactical, and lexicological approaches were also important for the
analyses.
In terms of methodology, the applied scientific methods were corporal, introspective, and
stochastic ones, including representations of generative grammar for derivational structure an...d formal
semantics as the methods of choice for a theoretical approach to meaning, its analysis, and modelling.
Based on the research questions raised in this dissertation, the following hypotheses were
tested qualitatively and quantitatively on corpus-related data and confirmed:
1) The derivational suffix -ljiv/-iv/-jiv primarily has a modal meaning, which allows for
passive and active meaning via structural ambiguity;
2) The derivational suffix -ljiv/-iv/-jiv has a scalar structure, and that scale can be binary
discrete or continual;
3) Verbs with an imperfective aspect have the tendency to motivate an adjectival ending in
-(lj)iv with a scalar meaning;
4) In situations where a negated adjective ending in -(lj)iv is used, and its non-negated variant
is not, the reason for that is not that the non-negated form does not exist, but that the pragmatic-
-semantic requirements of the non-negated adjective are fulfilled in extremely rare contexts;
5) The usage of less informative non-negated adjectives ending in -(lj)iv, and those more
rarely used than their negated counterparts, is limited by the syntactic-semantic environment;
6) When it comes to the composition of complex adjectives ending in -(lj)iv, the derivational
suffix -ljiv/-iv/-jiv is added to the whole motivational phrase.
The results of the measures of suffix productivity show that the suffix -ljiv is the most
productive of the three (-ljiv, -iv, -jiv), but the results for the productivity of the suffix -jiv do not
confirm the claims presented in the literature that -jiv is completely inactive and that it is slowly
disappearing. The occurrence of the suffix -jiv is indisputable with bases ending in n, where the
suffixes -ljiv and -iv for the same base are not excluded by phonological factors.9
To summarize, the most important results of this dissertation are: 1) its contribution to the
theory of adjectives with a modal meaning, as well as its contribution to the analysis of modality in
general; and 2) a description and further clarification of the semantic system and the system of word
formation in Serbian.
