zapadnoevropskom modelu. Parlamentarni sistem i postojeći modernizirajući potencijali u Srbiji,
modernizacije političkog sistema, ekonomije i društva.
i celovitu transformaciju.
The text that follows is the result of the long-term research study of modernization
processes in Leskovac and its surroundings, from its accession to Serbia under the Treaty of
Berlin in 1878, to the beginning of the Second World War, when these processes ceased under
the model from the beginning. The effect of all the modernization aspects of changes in the
organization of political life, society and economy is considered in relation to the existing
traditional basis, the interaction of tradition and modernization, as well as in relation to the
existing wider environment.
Modernization processes in Serbia, as well as other Balkan states that emerged after
gaining independence from the Ottoman Empire had begun decades ago, creating national
specifics on the development paths of each nation individually. Within these countries, many
local environments, such as Leskovac in Serbia or the first industrial centers in Bulgaria,
distinguished themselves with their own specifics, but, above a...ll, turbulent industrial
development, which significantly contributed to a faster and more complex social modernization.
Those modernization processes related to the democratization of political life, the emergence and
functioning of institutions, and the creation of a basis for the development of a modern society,
began as a direct influence of the state in the organization of the newly liberated regions
according to the Western European social model. The parliamentary system and the existing
modernizing potentials in Serbia that the ''New regions'' did not have before, emerged as a result
of the long-lasting modernization efforts of the Serbian intellectual elite, and by expanding into
four new districts after the Serbian-Turkish wars, enabled the state to appear in that area as the
first modernizer.
The results of the research confirmed the accuracy of the hypothesis that accumulated
trading capital, raw material resources, demographic potential, as well as the specific traditional
elements in connected territories, influenced through the institutionalization process after joining
Serbia, on the success and specialty of the modernization in Leskovac. Although the process of
adapting to the European model began with a delay of four decades in relation to the areas that
7
had been part of Serbia since the beginning of statehood, nevertheless it was faster and more
convincing in many segments, containing an intellectual problem, that is, a paradox worth
researching. So far, it has been published in literature only a faster pace of development in
Leskovac, but the problem has not always been explanatory approached.
The study of the way how Leskovac transformed from an oriental settlement into a city
that strives for the European way of life has revealed the plethora of synergistic flows of all
segments of life within the modernization of the political system, economy and society. The
unfortunate historical circumstances have affected the physical disappearance of many sources,
which would give a more complete picture of that period.Still, based on the analysis of the
available documents, it turned out that Leskovac, in the period before and after the First World
War, experienced with the flourishing of the local economy an essentially modern, turbulent, fast
and comprehensive transformation. The change in methodology also provides legitimacy of this
approach in recent modernization theories that are determined to deal with specific cases, rather
than typologies and discussion at the abstraction level.
