Stereotyping is one of the most important areas of interest in psychology, sociology, field of human rights and popular culture, which will be regarded in this paper as the carrier of ideology represented in its systems of representation. Stereotypes, simplified „pictures in our heads", defined by Lipman and given a fairly neutral meaning in 1922, support and make the relationships of domination in the United States natural, or, in other words - enable political, social and cultural inferiorisation of African American cultural group. Although inferiorisation of black race dates from the arrival to America, racist stereotypes in American popular culture experienced a real expansion in the 20th century, subjecting the distributive, thematic and genre distinctness of popular culture to the interests of the ruling, dominant class, and thus maintaining social and political status quo of African Americans. From the official policy of racial segregation and institutionalised racism, to racial inclusiveness and pluralistic nature of American society since the sixtiesand the Civil Rights Movement, the position of African Americans has undergone numerous transformations, accompanied by their varying cultural representation. Therefore, this dissertation indicates the mutual dependence of the dynamics of social relations in the United States and the stereotyping of African Americans in American popular culture, which uses its products as intentional and nonintentional agents and mediators of racist ideology. The major focus of this research has been negative stereotyping which unfolds in three ways – through complete omission of the Black race from the products of popular culture or its cultural annihilation, through minor representation of of the Black race or its marginalization, and its racist representation, all of which have reflected negatively on the process of racial integration in American society. Current trends in the prevalence of racist attitudes point to the detrimental impact of negative stereotypes on the perception of African American cultural group, in spite of the time distance with the institution of slavery in the United States of America. The basic theme of the dissertation is the consideration of different areas, forms, genres and periods of popular work through the prism of racial representation, by identifying categories of stereotyping process which have been the thread of ideological norming and social stratification.Multiple stereotype classification aims to point out the comprehensive, cleverly designed systematic evolution of racial discrimination that has been reflected in the perception of African American cultural group in the United States. and its perception in the broader, global context. The aim of the thesis is to point to harmful, inhibiting effect of scientific and pseudo-scientific basis of popular stereotypes, on the process of full integration of African Americans in US society. The dissertation suggests some measures to help neutralise the negative stereotypes and inhibit their impact, including the process of the positive stereotyping. Posing the question of significance of anti-discriminatory practices in the analysis of the problem of representation, perception and position of African Americans, is considered to be a prerequisite for their implementation. The basic hypothesis is that racial stereotypes in American popular culture have not been eliminated at any given moment, but have only been modified or transformed into a form that reflects the changes in the socio-political and cultural level, and is acceptable in terms of current (modern, humanistic and democratic) values. Transparent stereotypes, based on repetition and proof of animal characteristics of members of the Black race, have manifested open, oppressive policy of racial segregation and subordination, while covert, subtle stereotypes have manifested the policy which approves racial integration in theory, but not in practice...en
