Graphene-based materials are considered to be very good candidates for energy conversion and storage applications. While pristine graphene is chemically inert and interacts weakly with species of interest for electrochemical applications in this field, introduction of structural defects in graphene alters its electronic structure and reactivity. Design of materials with specific properties for targeted applications is one of the long-term goals of Materials science. Theoretical calculations can provide insights into the electronic structure and reactivity of the materials and help assess the possibility of their application for energy conversion and storage. In this work, density functional theory-based calculations were used to investigate the effect of modification of the chemical and electronic structure of graphene on its reactivity and applicability in metal-ion batteries (emphasis on sodium-ion batteries), hydrogen storage, аnd electrocatalysis of hydrogen evolution and oxygen reduction reactions. Electronic structure modifications were achieved by introduction of oxygen functional groups, dopants (B, N, P, S) and monovacancies onto the graphene basal plane. Special attention was dedicated to the oxidation of graphene and the importance of the inclusion of the oxygen functional groups in the theoretical model, so that the model would represent the real material in the best way possible. The results of the calculations were linked to the available experimental reports. General guidelines for designing materials suitable for mentioned applications are provided. The influence of dispersion correction on the results and conclusions was additionally investigated, as in some cases it can alter the overall conclusions.en
