The subject of the research in this doctoral thesis has included
defining new methods of management and presentation of the
architectural heritage and the possibility of their application in
Serbia. The latest generation of immovable cultural heritage
management methods, is based on the modernized evaluation of
heritage and its role in urban development, in accordance with the
principles of sustainable development.
Previous analysis of the subject of research has shown that the
place and role of immovable cultural heritage in urban
development changed during the twentieth century, and especially
since its end until today, which deserves more detailed research of
change in resolving problems related to treatment of built heritage.
Along with the adoption of the concept of sustainable
development in the 1980s, the process of reviewing of decision
making process on architectural heritage and its economic role in
the development of urban areas began. In the first decade of t...he
XXI century, this discourse has led to the development of new
methods for the management of cultural heritage, taking into
account not only cultural but also economic value of heritage.
During the same period, presentation of cultural heritage has been
continuously upgraded. The presentation, which serves experts to
denoting of carefully planned content, is in interdependence with
the interpretation, which undermines a set of activities aimed at
increasing the understanding and knowledge about cultural
heritage. The research topic of this thesis has included spatial
problems of presentation and interpretation of architectural
heritage, particularly archaeological sites, and other,
predominantly urban and architectural, aspects of the problem. In
the next step, the possibilities of application of modern models of
representation of architectural heritage in the urban area,
integrated into new models of governance, in Serbia, have been
researched.
The applicability of the method is validated through governance
models and presentations of architectural heritage in the urban
area of Nis, which is characterized by a rich archaeological
heritage from prehistory, antiquity and the Middle Ages. Due to
the continuous development of settlements from prehistoric times
to the present, a large part of the archaeological heritage is trapped
beneath the modern city, which has a significant influence on
urban development and prerequisites change of existing
conservation strategy of immovable cultural heritage.
