In this doctoral thesis, firstly the general characteristics of the signal and scalar quantizers, as well as the procedure of signal discretization, are described, and then the model of scalar compandor is shown. By linearization and approximation of the optimal compressor function, the simplification of the compandor model is done toward its simpler realization. The validity of compandor design based on linearized compressor function and approximative spline functions of the first and second order is confirmed in this thesis. Using spline functions, the optimal compressor function can be well approximated. Therefore, in this PhD thesis, special attention is paid to scalar compandor design by using first and second order spline functions. A detailed analysis of the proposed compandor models for the input signals modelled by Laplacian and Gaussian probability density function is done. Also, it is shown that by the proposed quantizer model, signal quality that is very close to signal quality of the optimal companding quantizer, is achieved. The analysis of the proposed compandor model allows designers to gain complete insight on the compandor technique significance, the support region, the number of segments, the number of quantization levels and the types of the input signals on the compandor performances, and also to design the optimal compandor model for the desired parameters.en
