(Jean-Marie Roger
Tillard) и
ABSTRACT
The primary objective of this research is theological reading and evaluating the theology
of the primacy of the Roman bishop in the light of ecclesiological assumptions made by
Dominican theologian Jean-Marie Roger Tillard and presenting the conclusions which
we consider useful for the continuation of the official dialogue between the Orthodox
and the Roman Catholics on the subject of the unity of the Chur
ch. We think that Tillard's
analysis of key theological problem of the Church (Papal primacy) can be of great
assistance in the ecumenical efforts of the Orthodox and the Roman Catholics to do
everything in order to restore the full Eucharistic communion between the two
Churches.
Contemporary texts written about the Church, and articulated in
the writings of great
Orthodox theologians (above all, Metropolitan John of Pergamon), influenced the
Tillard's theoretical overcoming of institutionalism, through the establishment of a
balance between Chris...tology and pneumatology in ecclesiology. Return to Trinitarian
theology as the fundamental theological framework, is implemented in almost all fields
of his research.
Being true to the ecclesiology inspired by Trinitarian theology
of
communion, Tillard
insists on the ontological status of the local Church, which receives its identity in the
communion with other local churches. With this, he starts not only a question of the
relation of these ecclesiastic local communities, but of their
current heads, the local
bishops, their mutual relations
and canonical order which they
manifest at their
assemblies. Considering the head
of the Catholic Church primarily as the Bishop of Rome
and choosing exactly this phrase as the substantial mark of the
Pope, Tillard offers the
rest of the Christendom a vision of the Roman Archpriest as a Bishop among Bishops,
who chairs the local Church, which is The by tradition confirmed as the First Church of
the Christian World. We believe that this aspect of Tillard's e
cclesiology - the theology of
primacy based on
bishop’s
Papal service, deserves further proper analysis. Tillard's
double intention - the concern for the preservation of the Sacramental and Episcopal
nature of the Papal primacy and its ontological (even martyriological) relationship with
the Chair (Cathedra) of the Roman Church, was the subject of our analysis and
reflections, singling out the consequences which this assumption can lead to through a
dialogue between Orthodoxy
and Roman Catholicism.
Starting from the idea that the authority in the Church finds its source in God our Father,
together with Tillard, the primacy is seen as service, whose nature is: sacramental
(Eucharistic), episcopal, martyriological, agapean, personal - corporate. This is why
Tillard's opus provokes the Roman Catholic theology, it is even
provoked in a positive
manner in order to defend diaconal, and not the autocratic service of the primate. The
Orthodox Church is faced with a challenge to openly confirm its
own tradition
conscience and the truth that it has never existed without the
primal on the ecumenical
level and that it, after the schism, recognized one in the person of the Archbishop of
Constantinople. His primacy has never been, and should never be
equal to the primacy
of the Roman Bishop of the second millennium, but it must not b
e reduced to a fluid and
imprecise primacy of honour, without clear powers of government.
It is exactly before these challenges that the members of the Orthodox-Catholic
Commission and the theologians of
both Churches have found themselves.
