Abstract

stract Efficiency of different types of clays from Serbia for adsorption of methylene blue was determined by their interaction with different concentrations of methylene blue (MB). Mineralogical characterisation of investigated clays and their interactions with MB solutions where determined using optical, XRD, chemical, DTA and spectrophotometric methods. The type of the MB aggregation on the clay particles enabled distinguishing of two types of clay minerals: high (smectite) and low charged (kaolinite). Dimeric structures are forming on the charged surfaces and the limits of their formation allow us to determine type of the clay mineral. MB molecule on the clay particle (001) of montmorillonite must be tilted at the calculated angle of 21.5o observing the MB b-axes or 68.5o or observing the MB c-axes. Maximum angle of tilting goes to a parallel orientation as a reflection of lower layer charge. Diffuse reflectance data give information about MB molecules adsorbed on the surface of the... clay particles without influence from the unadsorbed molecules as in the case of suspension. Determination of the layer change is possible by observing the color changes after MB saturation. Color is changing from saturated blue to green (smectite) or it remains blue, followed by changes in saturation (kaolinite). By adjusting grain size, zeta potential and pH of the suspension it is evident that different types of clays are efficient in adsorption of larger quantities of MB molecules (smectite) from the solution or/and in flocculation (kaolinite) of lower concentrated MB solutions. High adsorption or flocculation ability of different types of raw clays from Serbia make them potentially useful for removal of organic pollutions from the environment
