Abstract

Conceptualization of journey has multifaceted functions and features in the narative technique ever since the period of ancient literature, e.g. as a quest, adventure or pilgrimage. In the development of the novel, such model was central to determine the genre of the literary work, whereas in the modernist/postmodernist literature „the frame of travel discourse“ intensifies the reliability of narrative. This academic thesis, The Chronotope of the Road in the Novels of Vladimir Nabokov in English Language, is aimed at explaining the employment of this model within this author’s poetics. The conceptual metaphor of the road is the starting point to the indebth theoretical analysis of transformation and „transition/passage“ through space and time, including a series of chronotopic motifs in addition to the familiar postmodernist preoccupations such as homeland-emigration, home-exile, utopia-dystopia. Apart from that, the chronotope of the road could be interpreted in two different ways. In... the postmodernist discourse of Vladimir Nabokov’s novels the traveller is both the narrator or/and protagonist and the reader. On the other hand, within the given narrative, the travel metaphors are also manifested as mental process the protagonists go through as well as the „destination“ they try to reach. These two aspects are intertwined and essential for the interpretation, and the comprehensive analysis based on the conceptualization and chronotopic features of the road, will show how are associations of the travel concept thematized in the novels of Vladimir Nabokov written in English language.
