Abstract

Public concern over presence of steroid compounds in all environmental compartments has been constantly growing due to their widespread occurrence and potential adverse effects. Namely, steroid hormones and sterols can cause a number of functional disorders in humans and animals, even at trace levels. In addition, current worldwide trend is the application of chemical markers, as human/animal and plant sterols, for identification of sources of environmental contamination. Majority of the developed analytical methods for trace determination of steroid compounds are focused on a specific class of steroids. A limited number of methods for simultaneous determination of steroid hormones and sterols are reported in the literature, and all of them are based on the use of gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Due to some limitations of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method, there is a need for development of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method for trace determinatio...n of steroid compounds in environmental samples...
