The aim of this study was to examine the influence of various materials
used for the sealing of root canal system on healing of artificially
prepared bone defects in the mandible of Wistar rats. In this experimental
study, the following six materials for root canal obturation were
examined within different time frames (15, 30, 60 and 90 days): Apexit,
Endomethasone N, AH Plus, Roeko Seal, Fuji IX and Jodoform cement.
The defects were filled with the previously mentioned materials in the
experimental group while they were left to heal spontaneously in the
control group. At the end of each time frame the animals were sacrificed
and the preparations were analyzed by light microscopy. None of the
examined materials caused any permanent or serious damage to the
morphofunctional characteristics of bone tissue. Similar process of bone
defect healing to that of the control group was observed in the defects
filled with the materials Apexit, AH Plus, Roeko Seal, and Fuji IX, with
the exception o...f Roeko Seal and Fuji IX which were not absorbed until
the last observation period and AH Plus which was not absorbed until the
sixtieth day. Slower healing process was observed in the group where
Endomethasone N and Jodoform cement were used in comparison with
the control group, here the healing process was followed by an
inflammatory reaction which was present during longer observation
periods as well. By the end of the last observation period (90 days) all the
examined materials led to the healing of the treated bone defects.
