Kao dodatni deo kvantitativne analize korpusa tekstova, najpre smo razvili taksonomiju korišćenih naslova primarne navigacije, a zatim i obavili statističku proveru učestalosti pojavljivanja ključnih reči u okviru naslova.
In the focus of our research is discourse used by companies to portray their business identities in the form of public presentations on the internet. Considering this type of discourse as a communication act, message senders are companies and message receivers are all interest groups, internal, represented by employees and management team of organizations, and external, represented by buyers/clients, investors, social communities and other target groups. Discourse that we will examine in this paper can be characterized as public discourse of business communication intended for promotional purposes. It is the discourse with which organizations try to convey their corporate identity, so that it provokes positive impression and attitude with public and image about the organization, and, most importantly, trust. It is important to highlight that this is an instrumental goal that leads to the final goal – making cooperation between a company and interest groups. Speaking of public corporate discourse, which we are limited to in this paper, it is important to highlight that we observe itfrom the aspect of rhetorics that serves to accomplish persuasion of the public. This discourse is represented by linguistic and graphical tools, i.e. shorter or longer textual segments and photographies and photography slideshows with the accompanying text. This discourse analysis is performed upon two corpuses: corpus of texts and corpus of photographies from the web sites of 50 companies that operate on US market. In this thesis the key notion is the notion of ethos which will be explained through different rhetorical theories that relied upon it. However, here we will replicate the Ethos model adapted by theoreticians M. Isaksson and P.E.F. Jørgensen who based their adaptation on the understanding of ethos advocated by ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, whose foundations were later developed and adapted by subsequent theorists and linguists. The greatest merit in improving the model deserved communication scientist James McCroskey who gave a definition of ethos ad provided ethos dimensions in his work An Introduction to Rhetorical Communication (2001), which was later accepted by Isaksson and Jorgensen with slight alterations. The essence of this model for analysis lies in the fact that it is divided into three rhetorical startegies: selfpromotion, self-characterization and self-sacrifice, which further include 11 credibility appeals. We will apply this model of analysis to a larger and more various corpus than it was done by previous authors who based their research on mission statements as texts of non-routine business communication. The general aim of our research is to show discourse characteristics used for the purpose of building corporate ethos, to interpret and analyze them and point to potential effect of used tools. We will accomplish this general aim through the realization of specific goals which relate to determining and ilustrating the most frequent credibility appeals of the aforementioned rhetorical strategies, identification of of the expressions of goodwill of companies, as well as the recipients of these expressions. Furthemore, the specific goal is also sheding light on the way companies use to identify with message receivers and convey the feeling of similitude. especially with the use of the pronoun of the first person plural and pronouns of the second person singular and plural. In the realization of the set tasks we start from the hypothesis that business communication on the interent, whose end goal is to persuasion the public that their choice of giving trust to a certain company is justified, will show the prevalence of rhetorical tools used for highlighting good intentions of the company and tendencies of companies to produce satisfaction of interest groups, rather than prevalence of rhetorical tools used for the promotion of company’s business culture, values and goals, in other words, tools for self-promotion. Also, we expect that the linguistic realizations of these rhetorical strategies will bear huge similitude and be very convergent for all industries that given companies belong to. The application of qualitative analysis which was performed by encoding, i.e. marking textaul units and categorizing them according to the established model of analysis, will give as an insight into whish rhetorical strategy is used as the most favourable discourse tool for accomplishing the goal of persuasion. We will try to provide a rationalization for the obtained results, taking into consideration the context of modern business practice. Having considered the fact that he Ethos model has primarily been applied to the mission statements, which were, 30 years ago, one of the main instruments for building the corporate identity, it would be reckless not to observe their position and role in contemporary public business communication. We will observe whether they have, as a specific type of texts, been subjected to certain alterations considering their structure and form during this period, specially noting the changes in the categories of data included by mission statements and their quantity, but also the way they are presented on modern web sites, either being structurally separated or integrated into other textual units. Quantitative part of our analysis that relates to determining readability of the texts from our corpus contributes to the completeness of our analysis approach. We want to see whether a relationship between the easiness of reading and understanding the text and the position of the company on a rang list of the most successful companies can be seen. Having in mind the fact that the subject matter of our research is discourse with which companies create and present their ethos (character), that is, among other ways, accomplished with the choice of headings and subheadings used in the organisation of the text. As an additional part of the quantitative corpus analysis, we primarily developed the taxonomy of the headings used in primary navigation, and then performed statistical frequency count of key words contained in headings. Headings were clasified into two groups named ’Ethos headings’ and ’Web site headings’. The first group refers to the headings that are marked by a certain ethos quality,a nd the second group refers to the web site architecture. We quantified all instances and obtained results that show that headings belonging to the ’Ethos’ group were dominantly used, which confirms our assumption that digital language that has been popular recently is being replaced by formulations that represent some kind of appeal to message receivers to form a positive impression about the credibility of the message source. The results of qualitative analysis, i.e. marking textual units with respect to belonging to a certain credibility appeal, and according to the established model, show that the credibility appeal of presence/characteristics is the most present compared to the other ten credibility appeals. This means that the rhetorics of the discourse of business entities in question primarily refers to the strategy of self-promotion, and the most prominent values that it mirrors are aspirations towards business excellence, expertise, teamwork, efficiency, innovativeness and sustainability. In this thesis we have posed a question of who are the main recipients of companies’ good intentions or goodwill. The most important recipient is externally oriented and they are customers/clients. However, these results of the analysis of recipients of goodwill are not in accordance with the fact that that readability index of texts in corpus is not congruent with the range expected for promotional texts of business character presented through this communication channel (60-70). This imposes a question whether public corporate presentations on the internet are really primarily addressed to the target group of customers or maybe companies, while formulating their public presentations, have some other target groups in mind, or some other goals, such as, for example, attracting new stakeholders, investors and suppliers. Finally, the focus of our attention are als photographies that comprise a smaller body of research and we observe them from the aspect of semiotics, trying to find the connection in meaning between a photographiy and text that relates to it. We expect certain divergence in the use of motives within different industries that business entities belong to. Despite the fact that the discourse of public business communication has been thoroughly analysed within various linguistic analysis, the contribution of our research lies in the fact that our body of research is large and contemporary, and therefore it reflects certain changes in business marketing. Furhermore, the fact that the analyses have been performed on a large and comprehensive body of research contributes to the representativeness of obtained results for this type of discourse. These findings should give rise to further research deliberations on the persuasive rhetorics of the discourse in public corporate presentations.en
