The study is divided into two sections. The general section is devoted to problems
concerning the concept of "allegorical" and heterogeneity of examples which get identified as
allegoresis in contemporary research. The neglected dimensions of this phenomenon are
discussed, followed by a critical review of findings that paint the history of allegoresis in
modern research, from the contentious origins to the Byzantine Homeric commentaries. The
general picture is then further substantiated by an analysis of prominent terms used in source
texts to denote the meaning the interpreters seek. The inquiry in this section determines the
way answers are pursued in the second part of the study. The specific section is dedicated to allegoresis of Odysseus’ wanderings, which are
essential for the allegorical reception of the poem. The analysis considers explicit
interpretations of the epic or its relevant segments found in ancient and Byzantine sources
(up until XII century). It takes into account t...heir individual characteristics, the context in
which they occurred, the attitude towards the text which is interpreted, vocabulary they use,
the perceived meaning of Homeric words. Thus the allegorical readings of the Odyssey are for
the first time gathered together and viewed as a problem in itself, separate from other
Homeric material, especially in light of the fact that the divine characters, which are dominant
in ancient allegoresis, are not emblematic for many scenes of this poem. The analysis identifies layers in allegoresis which were formed under various
influences. Among those most neglected or misrepresented influences are contemplations
which use an Odyssean paradigm as a means of expression. The examination also points to
significant differences in approach and understanding of the poem and allegorical within it,
among interpreters who mostly use the same exegetical sources or line of argument, but do
so in a different way. Relevance of the findings in view of the general picture given in the
introductory section is made evident. On the basis of included sources a kind of allegorical
thesaurus of Odysseus’ wanderings is assembled. The Homeric phrases which are treated in
allegoresis are noted and cited together with elucidation or parallels of these phrases given
in relevant interpretations. They are usually quite abounding in implications significant for a
number of philosophical teachings, as well as for the history of ideas and cultural history in
general.
