Doctoral dissertation entitled ‘English novel for children and young people translated into Serbian language – study and bibliography’ includes the period 1972-2011. The intention of the researcher in this doctoral dissertation was to find out which novels had been translated from English into Serbian language during this period, to find out about their contents, genre structure, main characters, topics and writers‟ ideas. Complexity of theme that occupied our attention imposed the need to analyze certain value elements of mentioned novels which were used as application. We thought that from certain extracts of these novels and with important segments we could get an impression and knowledge about values that make the English culture, civilization and language different from others. Likewise, novels that are treated as school reading were approached on the base of criteria of critical and aesthetical evaluation, with the help of segments of the originl and translated works. A wide range of themes and ideas, various approaches of writers from different time periods and geographic areas, determined thematical frame of approaching the novels which can be noticed in the title of the first, theoretical part of dissertation. These text segments, and various methodological approaches to novels, according to their starting points, make a whole, which except its compositional characteristics, offers information about authors and inner forms of literary creations. In order to ensure the authenticity of certain (important) values of novels, we used the English original or independent translation. We particularly indicated the function of dialogue, dramatic adventurous scenes in which heroes form their life attitudes, humoristic situations, psychological details that reveal heroes‟ emotions, descriptions of nature and the environment where the action takes place. All these compositional, linguistic and stylistic characteristics that make the inner form of literary creation, we tried to segregate, and according to the claims of contemporary literary theorists, to prove that literary creations which occupied our attention are unique and unrepeatable. The second part of dissertation contains bibliography of those translated literary creations which can be proposed to young recipients and scholars as sources of self identification and the knowledge of universal phenomena in life and world. Thus we aspired in this work to confirm the attitude that in the original and translated work, with the use of a number of different approaches, an image or a mosaic is created about literary works as some kind of aesthetical phenomena. By keeping our attention on ambiguous linguistic constructions we tried to discover polysemy of language and its expressiveness, especially in novels written in the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, such as vividness, rhythmicity, emotionality, concreteness. By analytical-synthetical procedures and by recognition of values of translation and the original creation, by taking into account Aristotle‟s attitude (paraphrased), that language should be given the form of something unusual that would make literary text different from common form of communication, by bibliographic allegation of selected translated creations, we provided information we had obtained by investigation and we defined attitudes about individual values of literary creations of English authors, using ideas of literary theorists, translators and aestheticians.en
