This scientific research work is based on unpublished material of Diplomatic Archives of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Military Archives, Military Archives in Belgrade, the Archives of Yugoslavia, Archives of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Archives of Serbia, as well as on the basis of published documents, memoirs, relevant historical literature, press and periodicals. In accordance with the topic, documents of German, Yugoslav, French and British provenance had the greatest importance and enabled the author to better understand and explain the nature of the military and political relations between the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the Third Reich. The main objective of the author was to comprehensively reconstruct a military segment of the bilateral relations in the period from the Hitler’s taking power in Germany in January 1933 to the end of the brief April war in 1941, as well as all relevant factors that influenced that relationship. The topic is processed with chronological and thematic research approach. Special attention was paid to the German influence on the development of professional military organizations in Serbia as well as the development of political, economic and cultural ties between Serbs and Germans. After mutual experience as fair opponents in the First World War, Yugoslav state and Germany began to harmonize dynamically their economic and political interests at the time of the Great Depression. At that time, The Yugoslav army was under strong French influence. The Increasie of Germans interest in Yugoslav Army existed since the twenties, however the interest among the Yugoslavs in Wehrmacht arises after the introduction of compulsory military service in Germany in 1935. Bilateral military-diplomatic relations at the nonresident level were established in 1933 and on a residential basis in 1935/36. Beginnings of military cooperation are linked to the Government of Milan Stojadinovic, while Herman Goering had played a crucial role on the German side. Cooperation is designed based on mutual economic and political interests. Main forms of cooperation during this period were military economic cooperation and procurement for the requirements of the Yugoslav Air Force and Navy, while procurement for the Land Forces was directed to Czechoslovakia and France. The Yugoslav military establishment had mainly positive attitude towards the Third Reich, as a counterbalance to Italy, until the Anschluss of Austria in 1938, and after that they sow Germany as a major foreign policy threat. After the German dismemberment of Czechoslovakia, main interest in its relations with the Third Reich became the procurement of arms to the Yugoslavs and the smooth flow of strategic raw materials for the Germans. With the outbreak of World War II, Yugoslav state declared neutrality while the sympathies of political and military establishments and the majority of the population were to the Allies with whom they secretly cooperate on development of joint defense plans. German trust in the Yugoslavs began to decline after the fall of Prime Minister Milan Stojadinovic, and completely undermine after the capture of confidential archives of the French General Staff in June 1940 that indicated the cooperation of the Yugoslav political and military authorities with the Allies. Author also points out the role of the Yugoslav Military Intelligence Service as a channel for the flow of information between military conspirators against Hitler and the British, whose main contact point was the Yugoslav military attaché in Berlin, Colonel Vladimir Vauhnik. The author concludes that the policy of prolonged negotiations on the country joining to The Tripartite Pact carried out by Prince Paul delayed the German military action against Greece (Marita) for four weeks. The military coup on March 27 1941 carried out at strategically least favorable moment for the country, when the strong German forces were already all around its borders, had no other value for Allies war effort apart from the moral effect. The Yugoslav military leaders managed to implement systematic measures aimed at paralyzing the subversive activities of the German national minority. But the main threat to the cohesion of the Army came from the Croatian ethnic group, and it could not be prevented because of internal policy reasons. Some of the factors influencing low level of combat readiness of the Yugoslav Army before April war were its technical backwardness, changing doctrinal concepts just before the conflict, the political and national disunity and the decision to defend the whole national territory, which was made for political reasons contrary to military logicen
