When the Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos (1042–1055) put his advisor Michael Psellos into the home of Constantine X Doukas, a long-term friendship between Psellos and Doukas was created. It culminated with Constantine’s enthronement. The chronological framework of the doctoral dissertation The Emperor Constantine X Doukas and Michael Psellos – a History of the Relationship encompasses the period from the rain of Constantine IX Monomachos to the rule of Michael VII Doukas (1071–1078). The research included in this paper is based on the historical analysis of the writings by Psellos which testify about Constantine X. This refers to a historiographical work by Psellos, Chronographia, one of the most significant works in the entire Byzantine literature, which contains a separate chapter dedicated to Constantine Doukas. In addition, there are Psellos’ imperial speeches (encomiums), which were written in honour of Constantine X, letters addressed to this emperor, and Doukas’ imperial proclamation which was composed by Michael Psellos. Psellos’ imperial speeches, dedicated to Constantine X Doukas, represent one of the links in the chain of epideictic rhetoric of the early Byzantine era until the fall of Constantinople. Its function was to reaffirm the ruling political ideology of Romans in every possible way. Having compared the historical materials, it was determined that Michael Psellos dedicated four encomiums to Constantine Doukas. These are: the speech addressed to the Emperor Constantine Doukas [(Δμηγορία εἰς τὸν βασιλέα τὸν Δούκαν) speech No. 14 in the edition by G. Dennis]; the two unaddressed encomiums (encomiums No. 9 and No. 10 in the edition by Dennis); and, the miniature encomium embedded in the speech by Michael VII Doukas, the son of Constantine (speech No. 8 in the aforementioned edition). After the Byzantines defended the city of Messina from the Normans around 1060/1061, Michael Psellos composed the imperial speech No. 9 in the edition by Dennis, and addressed it to Constantine X in honour of this success. After the Byzantine Empire was no longer under a threat from the Oghuz Turks, Psellos dedicated another two encomiums to Constantine Doukas (encomiums No. 10 and No. 14) in which he praised the achieved victory. These encomiums were composed in the period from the middle of 1065 to the middle of 1067. Unfortunately, there is no certain proof about which of these two encomiums was written first. The compositions of the imperial speeches of Constantine Doukas, which were written by Psellos, reflect the structures of the encomiums which had been written by previous rhetoricians. Being that the choice of the topic of an imperial speech was given to the very rhetorician, Psellos used those motifs which corresponded to the then current political climate. In that way, he proved himself loyal to the will of the Emperor and to the state ideology of the Byzantine Empire, and as a great connoisseur of the previously written works...en
