Anglo-American popular music has considerably influenced the viewpoints and writing style of a number of contemporary British and Irish authors. The main research goal of the present dissertation is to investigate the relationship between Anglo-American popular music and some British and Irish prose works in the second half of the twentieth century and at the beginning of the twenty-first century as well; the central thesis is that there are important thematic and contextual connections between them. Furthermore, the primary aim of this study is to provide new insights into the different modes of (re)constructing and representing cultures of popular music and its industries, history, meanings and identities in British and Irish prose, using different interdisciplinary, analytical, dialectic and discursive research methods of cultural investigation of the context in which some genres of popular music developed and certain prose works were created. The nature of personal, social and (multi)cultural changes in urban environment, which greatly influenced authors in their approach to creating narratives, is represented in the novels and autobiographies which are the subject of the analysis in this paper. The primary analysis includes the selected works of Colin MacInnes, Hanif Kureishi, John Lydon, Morrissey, Roddy Doyle, John Niven, Nick Hornby. The theoretical starting point is both in the necessary literary investigation predominantly within the frame of postmodernism and the theoretical examination of the essential aspects of contemporary cultural theory of Anglo-American popular music. During the second half of the twentieth century, popular music (as a narrative form in popular culture) became relevant and important in constructing social, cultural, personal identities in many prose works; it is a complex system of meanings in the contexts which are connected with the stories or their segments. Also, popular music is a part of intertextual structures, a metaphor, and, certainly, an important part of the postmodern narrative structure. This dissertation offers interpretations and answers which can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the selected prose works and their contexts and contemporary Anglo-American popular music as an important part of their structure as well.en
