The goal of this dissertation is to use a genre-poetical and literary-historical base to analyze the possibility of establishing a specific sub-genre core in twentieth century literature, which is created through a multicenturies tradition of menippean satire and the carnivalization of literature on the one hand, and modernism on the other. The theoretical basis for this work is Bakhtin’s theory of carnivals, national culture and carnivalization as a way of transposing these motifs and phenomena in literature. Using Bakhtin’s theory of establishing a genre line of carnivalized literature, this dissertation initially proves that two novels written by Milos Crnjanski (The Diary of Carnojevic and The Second Book of Migrations) and four novels that represent the European context during this time, and which also reference both of Crnjanski’s novels (Italo Svevo’s Senility, Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain, Mikhail Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita, and Lawrence Durrel’s The Alexandria Quartet), belong to the same genre tradition, or rather have carnivalization as a dominant and even key element of their structure and style. In this sense, the purpose of this research is to detect specific elements in these works that are characteristic of the literary period during which they were created, which is broad when considering modernism, or rather avant-garde and post-avant-garde. The result of examining the genre tradition, or rather carnivalization and menippea, and literary-historical context, or rather modernism in these works, should be the definition of a “new” sub-genre, based directly on these two premises (genre and periodization). From the thematic-motivic and semantic context in all of these modern works, one can delineate the crucial question of identity (hero, society, the work itself), so that this new genre sub-group of carnivalized modernistic literature, represented by the aforementioned works, can be characterized as carnival-identity literature, or rather, as will be shown in this work, a kind of carnivalization of identity.en
