Readers and scholars of different profiles and interests were receptive to Stanislav Vinaver’s multifaceted body of work – essays, poetry, travel writing, parody. This study presents the results of research into the author’s contribution to comparative literature studies and its evaluation. The research focus is on the author’s methodological and heuristic foundations, interpretive insights into different European national literatures and the ideologemes that have directed these insights. Vinaver, a man of extraordinary erudition, a polymath and a polyglot, led a dialogue with the European literatures and cultures with undiminished intensity and enthusiasm throughout his decades-long literary career. Hardly any Serbian author has invoked in his sphere of interest the French, Anglo-American, German, Italian, Russian, Czech (etc.) culture and literature or written about them with the authority of a savant and a connoisseur, simultaneously incorporating the results of these dialogues into his own poetics. In essays and articles, Vinaver skillfully used, either intuitively or with an awareness of theoretical background, the key comparative methods and concepts, some of which would only be conceptually marked decades later. The author’s comparative methodological paradigm entailed favoring the research of typological similarity rather than the genetic-contact connections, overcoming the burden of positivism and historicism that marked comparative literature in the first half of the 20th century. The sensitivity for the horizons of reception, the analysis of alternation of literary texts in the recipient culture, the understanding of translation as an act of contact between cultures and the actualization of the ideologem world literature (ranging from cosmopolitanism to cultural nationalism) all make his texts current and relevant in the context of contemporary studies in comparative literature. Also, this paper insists on Vinaver’s closeness to the concept of comparative literature established by René Wellek - the comparative literature that puts the research focus on literariness and interprets literature and literature studies in the context of preserving humanistic values. The study singled out the areas in which Vinaver gave the most significant contributions to comparative literature. Reflecting on the culture of laughter, tradition and modernity, translation and the ideologem world literature from the perspective of convergence of various literatures and cultures, Vinaver’s goal was not only to put Serbian literature on the European map (at least the one his culture was focused on). Instead, he endeavored, perhaps more, to cut through the national discourse on literary history and offer a different concept of Serbian literature. Vinaver understood insights into foreign literatures and their links with his own culture and literature as complementing the national literary historiography. Therefore, the focus in this paper was placed on the author’s historiographical vision of Serbian literature, inherent in which are both the cosmopolitan openness and the creative reliance on its own traditions which are, again, part of the broader European culture.en
