modifikovanu verziju modela konvektivnih oblaka – ARPS (Advanced Regional
Prognostic System) u nezasejavanim i zasejavanim slučajevima. Osnovna verzija
(krupa i smrznute kišne kapi) i dvomomentne mikrofizičke šeme.
kapi i grada. Koncentracija oblačnih kapljica je konstantna u datim simulacijama. Pored
mnogim zemljama. Glavni... ciljevi modifikacije vremena su suzbijanje grada i povećanje
kiše na tlu. Gradonosne oluje prouzrokuju veliku štetu poljoprivredi i imovini u mnogim
delovima sveta.
efektivnost suzbijanja grada opada kako koncentracija oblačnih kapljica raste.
The main objective of this thesis is the simulation of the cloud and accumulated
precipitation at the surface for a modified model of convective clouds – ARPS
(Advanced Regional Prognostic System) in unseeded and seeded cases. The basic
version of the ARPS model was developed at the University of Oklahoma. The essence
of our modification consisted of introducing two categories of precipitation elements as
hail embryos (graupel and frozen raindrops) and two-moment bulk microphysical
scheme. It introduced the number concentration as a prognostic variable for all
microphysics fields except water vapour and cloud water. Therefore, the model predicts
the mixing ratios and number concentration of the six microphysical elements –
raindrops, ice crystals, snow, graupel, frozen raindrops and hail. The cloud droplet
number concentration was prescribed. Nevertheless, the software package for cloud
seeding with silver-iodide is incorporated in the model.
Weather modification activities have been c...onducted over the past several
decades in many countries. The main objectives of weather modification are hail
suppression and rain enhancement on the ground. Hailstorms cause significant damage
to agriculture and property in many areas of the world. Numerical models can be used in
order to better investigate the clouds and their response to cloud seeding. First, it
investigated the impact of cloud droplet concentration on hail suppression effectiveness.
It performed sensitivity tests of accumulated precipitation amounts (rain and hail) on the
cloud droplet concentration in unseeded and seeded cases. For the unseeded case, it can
be noted that increasing the concentration of cloud droplets created a reduction in rain
accumulation, while the amount of hail accumulation increased. It is necessary to
understand whether natural diversity in the cloud droplet concentration can affect the
effectiveness of hail suppression. For operational cloud seeding activities, it would be
helpful to determine whether it is possible to suppress hail if we know the optimal level
of concentration for cloud droplets. The results showed that hail suppression
effectiveness had the greatest influence on lowering cloud droplet concentration levels;
suppression effectiveness decreased as the cloud droplet concentration increased.
Further, it performed cloud simulations for two different modes of the liquid
water spectrum: a unified Khrgian-Mazin size distribution for the entire spectrum of
drops and the monodisperse size distribution for cloud droplets with the exponential
Marshall-Palmer distribution for raindrops. It is analysed the differences in simulated
surface precipitation for the two assumed approaches with different values of cloud
droplet number concentration. The results showed that there are significant differences
in the occurrence, amount and spatial distribution of accumulated precipitation at the
surface. It can be noted that the unified Khrgian-Mazin size distribution is generally
more sensitive to changes in the cloud droplet number concentration than an alternative
approach. A well-known characteristic of the rain showers generated by convective
clouds and observed cloud splitting are well simulated with the unified Khrgian-Mazin
size distribution, especially for smaller values of cloud droplet number concentration. In
the case with the unified Khrgian-Mazin size distribution, cloud seeding results in
significantly reducing of the accumulated hail on the ground. Contrary, the second case
is characterized by the increase of the accumulated hail at the surface.
It is useful to describe the size spectrum of hail and the mechanisms of formation
in more detail. One important point in the formation of hail is the role of hailstone
embryos. It examined the influence of hailstone embryos on the amount and duration of
ground precipitation. Thus, we performed a numerical comparison of the two
microphysical schemes, one with hailstone embryos and the other without them. The
results indicated that the microphysical scenario with hailstone embryos lead to a
greater increase in accumulated hail compared with the scheme without hailstone
embryos. The time of hail occurrence on the ground occurs during the early stages of
cloud life in the experiment without hailstone embryos. In the second case, the hail
occurrence on the ground was delayed for the later stages of cloud life, which is much
more realistic and in agreement with the measurements. In the model with hail embryos,
cloud seeding results in a significant reduction of the accumulated hail at the surface,
while the second case is not sensitive to cloud seeding.
The two-moment model with included hailstone embryos and the unified
Khrgian-Mazin size distribution is generally more sensitive to cloud seeding, in
compared to the single-moment model. The two-moment model proved to be a better
tool in numerical simulation of clouds. Therefore, the two-moment model is
recommended for use in numerical modeling of the convective clouds.
