The object of study in this thesis is the plasma generated in argon stabilized U – shaped DC arc. The aim of the present study is to investigate the influence of water aerosol, easily ionized element (potassium) and molecular gas on the excitation conditions and the state of thermodynamic equilibrium in argon plasma at atmospheric pressure. The results are expected to contribute to a better understanding of processes taking place in the mixed gas plasma, particularly those processes that affect the analytical capabilities of the used arc source. In other types of excitation sources, that are commonly used in spectrochemical practice, the presence of water aerosol, easily ionized elements and molecular gas affect the plasma parameters as well. Therefore, the results presented in this thesis are also significant for other plasma sources, especially those that operate at atmospheric pressure and in which gradients of temperature and electrons number density are present. Тhe impact of water aerosol on the state of thermodynamic equilibrium in the arc plasma was studied first. For this purpose, the difference between electron (Te) and heavy particle temperature (Tg) was determined, and compared to the results for the argon plasma with the introduction of water aerosol. It was concluded that the presence of water aerosol reduces the difference between Te and Tg. In other words, the presence of water aerosol brings arc plasma closer to the state of local thermodynamic equilibrium. Further, the effect of the addition of different concentrations of easily ionized element (potassium) on the radial distribution of temperature and electron number density in the arc core was investigated. The results showed that the addition of potassium chloride reduces the electron density and temperature of the arc core. The decline was larger for higher concentrations of KCl and lower arc currents. The influence of potassium on plasma parameters can be attributed to the demixing effect. Molecular gases, nitrogen and oxygen, were added to three different initial plasma compositions: pure argon plasma, argon plasma with water aerosol and argon plasma with water aerosol and 0.5% KCl. It was shown that the effect of the nitrogen addition depends on molecular gas concentration. Admixtures of nitrogen from 1 up to 10 % (in the case of Ar-N2-water aerosol plasma) or up to 5 % (in the presence of 0.5 % KCl) produced a more contracted discharge, with larger gradients of electron number density and temperature, as compared to plasma without molecular gas addition. The opposite effect was observed in the gas mixtures with 20 % of nitrogen. In that case, the arc core was expanded, and the radial profile of electron density and temperature became flatter. The changes in the radial structure of the discharge could be explained by increased thermal conductivity of mixed gas plasma and the presence of N2+ ions. It was also found that increasing nitrogen content brings plasma closer to the thermal equilibrium. Compared to nitrogen, the effect of oxygen addition on the plasma parameters was almost negligible. Such behavior could probably be caused by a high degree of dissociation of oxygen in the arc core. Thus, mixture of argon and oxygen acts as a mixture of two atomic gases with similar ionization potential. To evaluate the effect of molecular gas upon analytic performances of investigated arc source, limits of detections (LODs) were measured for several elements covering a wide range of first ionization energies (Zn, Cu, Li, and Rb). In the plasma without KCl, the addition of nitrogen resulted in lowering of LODs for Cu, Li and Rb, while the opposite was observed for Zn. In the presence of KCl the addition of nitrogen had little or no effect on LODs for Cu, Li and Rb, while detection limit for Zn was increased. For all elements under the study, the presence of oxygen in the plasma had very little effect on their detection limits.en
