The main object of this work are the methods for calculation of sound insulation based on the classical model of sound propagation in buildings and single-number rating of sound insulation. The aim of the work is inspection of the possibilities for improvement of standard methods for quantification and calculation of sound insulation, in order to achieve higher accuracy of the obtained numerical values and their correlation with subjective impression of the acoustic comfort in buildings. Procedures for calculation of sound insulation and its representation with single-number values, which are used in engineering practice, are described in the international standards and norms EN 12354, ISO 717, as well as the proposed ISO 16717. The norm EN 12354 is the first and the only existing international standard which describes methods for calculation of sound insulation – from airborne and structure born sound inside the buildings as well as airborne outdoor sound. The methods are based on the... classical theoretical model of sound propagation in buildings and in general give values of frequency dependent descriptors of sound insulation. Rating sound insulation with single-number values has been introduced to simplify assessment of the insulation of building elements and make more efficient standardization of sound insulation criteria. Procedures for calculation of single-number values are defined in the current standard ISO 717 and the new standard proposal ISO 16717, and are based on the implementation of the reference curves of sound insulation and the reference noise spectra. The obtained single-number values of sound insulation are expected to correlate well with subjective impression of the acoustic comfort, making the objective sound insulation descriptors closer to the subjective criteria.
The first part of the work gives a detailed description of the relevant algorithms for calculation of frequency dependent, as well as wideband single-number values of sound insulation. Due to the large number and complexity of the modelled acoustic phenomena associated with the propagation of sound in buildings, calculation of sound...
