Golden jackal (Canis aureus L. 1758) is a widespread species of the dog family. It is a medium sized canid with a prominent social organization. Balkan Peninsula is considered the center of its distribution in the European part of the range. During recent history, jackal distribution in Europe has been very dynamic. The first half of the twentieth century was marked by constant and very strong decline in population number, as well as range reduction. The causes of the very rapid disappearance from vast areas are large poisoning activities (which were particularly intense in the period after the end of World War II), as well as over-hunting and habitat disruption. Jackal population number was increasing during the last two decades of the twentieth century, and jackals expanded their range and recolonized indigenous habitats. Moreover, jackals expanded into new areas that were not inhabited before by this species. Today, vagrant specimens can be found in some countries in western and northern Europe. The spreading of jackals was also recorded in Serbia where they were almost on the verge of extinction by the end of the 1970's. Since the 1980's, the population begins to recover and expand from three areas within which they have never disappeared: Srem region, Negotin area, and Bela Palanka. Rapid spread of populations and range increase, in fact the process of recolonization was so powerful that it could be designated as expansion. Today jackals are present on more than 2/3 of the territory of Serbia. Jackal is a hunting species in Serbia and according to hunting bag data, the largest populations are in the area of Negotinska Krajina, along Morava river, the Lower Danube, and Srem region...en
