Studies of mental health of children with intellectual disabilities (ID) show that there are three to four times higher risk of clinical manifestation of emotional and behavioral disorders in these children compared with children without disability. The most frequent disturbances of emotions and behavior, with symptoms that meet standard diagnostic categories, are typical for children with mild levels of ID, and relatively preserved cognitive and comunicative abilities in these children allow the use of standard diagnostic criteria and instruments used in children without ID. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency, types and socio-demographic and personal factors predictive of mental and behavioral disorders in children with mild ID, aged 9-18 years, who attend special schools for children with intellectual disability. The study sample was selected using cluster random sampling, with inclusion of eight special primary schools in Serbia, in which all the students that met the following selection criteria were tested: mild Id (IQ range from 50-69, measured by standardized intelligence scales for children), 9-18 years of age and absence of serious comorbid conditions, particularly different forms of neuropathology and autism. The total sample included 311 children with a balanced gender distribution and the highest number of children aged from 10 to 16 years. The study used Behavioral checklist for children aged 6-18 years, the Teacher Report Form (TRF - Teacher Report Form, Achenbach & Rescorla, 2001), with 113 problem items that cover a wide range of problem behaviors, which are assesed on a scale of 0 - 2, as well as for this particular research designed Questionnaire about personal characteristics of children - respondents and socio-economic status of their families. The informants were classroom teachers. The results show an increased incidence of psychopathology in children in our sample compared to norms of average population. Externalizing – behavioral disorders were more prominent than Internalizing - emotional problems. In addition, comorbidity of both dimensions had higher frequency than expected. Personal and socio-demographic factors, particularly gender, age, birth order, ethnicity, intellectual abilities, type of placement of the child, family economic status, parents' education and employment significantly affected both dimensions of problems. Girls were generally under greater risk for the manifestation of pathology then boys. Children with poor school achievement and lower abilities had more serious Internalized disorders, while children of higher abilities, particularly from Roma ethnicity, showed more frequent behavioral problems. Poor income and low socio-economic status of families as well as parents' unemployment negatively influenced behavioral difficulties, while higher levels of parental education and higher economic standard of the families influenced emotional problems. First born children and those living in incomplete families were at the greatest risk of Internalizing disorders, while Externalizing symptoms recommended that a greater emphasis should be put on early detection of psychopathology, including the process of additional education of school staff and parents - carers in terms of better understanding and mitigation of risk factors, but also in terms of recognition of atypical signs and indicators of emotional and behavioral problems in children with mild ID. more frequent in youngest children from large families, and children without parental care situated in foster - care insistutions. Results of this study indicate the need for serious consideration of the living conditions and education of children with mild ID, in order to prevent mental health disorders. Detected factors of increased vulnerability belong to the group of those who could be a subject of modification, which has practical implications in terms of taking concrete steps for prevention, particularly by engaging relevant stakeholders in the educational environment.
