Abstract

The study of aquatic Oligochaeta in freshwaters in Serbia represents a contribution to the development of the entire oligochaetan fauna inventory of Serbia. The investigation included ten river basins that cover the area south of the Danube River, including the stretch of the Danube that flows through Serbia. In total, 61 taxa from nine families were recorded and 56 taxa were identified to the species level. One genus and eleven species were noted for the first time in the running waters of Serbia: Achaeta sp., Bothrioneurum vejdovskyanum, Chaetogaster langi, Cognettia sphagnetorum, Enchytraeus buchholzi, E. christenseni, Henlea ventriculosa, Marionina argentea, Potamothrix danubialis, P. heuscheri, P. moldaviensis, and Vejdovskyella intermedia. The majority of the identified species are frequent and cosmopolitan. In terms of the species richness, the most dominant families were Tubificidae and Naidiae and they were recorded in all investigated river basins. The highest species richnes...s was observed in the Danube catchment area (37 species), followed by the Zapadna Morava, Ibar, and Kolubara basins (27, 24, and 23 species, respectively), while the lowest was recorded in the channels of the Belgrade region (10 species). The composition of the oligochaetan community showed a clear pattern – lower diversity in tributaries, higher diversity in the main flow. The most frequent species in Oligochaeta assemblages was Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (F=0,51), but Stilodrilus heringianus also showed a significant occurrence (F=0,33). Two genus and ten species were recorded at only one locality each with frequency of F=0,004 (Acheta sp., Fridericia sp., Chaetogaster diaphanus, Ch. limnaei, Dero dorsalis, Nais simplex, Uncinais uncinata, Vejdovskyella intermedia, Potamothrix heuscheri, Spirosperma ferox, Cognettia sphagnetorum and Rhynchelmis limosella)...
