In Antiquity and the Middle Ages the sole right to mint and issue coins was the central concern both of rulers and smaller urban communities that minted coins independently. The primary issue of every ruler who sat on the throne – either legitimately or by usurpation – was to mint coins with his name and portrait as the final act of consolidation of his power and authority. From that moment on, the thin metal disc carried more than its monetary value as it was also a powerful device of projection and promotion of the personality of the ruler and his imperial policy. This was achieved by using the specific type of language consisting of numerous representations of money and the coin legends that are extremely rich in symbolism. The subject of this thesis is the examination of the complex system of ideas used to create the representation of power on medieval Serbian coinage, as well as the usage of money as a medium, the physical carrier and transferor of the desired information, through the iconography and symbolism of the specific representations and coin legends found on Serbian medieval money. The research focuses on numismatic material dating from four different phases of the monetary system development in medieval Serbia: the age of kingdom, the age of empire, the age of feudal lords and the age of despotate, i.e. the period started in 1228, when minting of Serbian coins began under king Radoslav and ended in 1458 when despot Lazar Brankovic issued the last money of medieval Serbian state. The first part of thesis focuses on iconography and symbolism of the specific representations that are found on the obverse and reverse faces of Serbian coins. As traditional iconographic templates whose development may be observed over a very long period (usually starting in Late Antiquity) are regularly found on medieval Serbian coins, the author examines the long historical development of these templates, their first appearance on coinage, their distribution on coinage of the East, the West and finally, their appearance on medieval Serbian coins. The author also examines the ways, motivations and mechanisms of endorsement of foreign iconographic patterns found on Serbian coins, their adapting, their eventual iconographic individuality and their localization to the ideology and political propaganda of medieval Serbian rulers. The Eastern and Western iconographic patterns found on medieval Serbian coins are juxtaposed and the emergence of the original iconography is examined in the thesis. The second part of thesis focusses on historical and economic circumstances under which the money was issued, the importance and significance of the lessees of mints and minters of Serbian vii coins, as well as on the circulation of foreign coins on the territory of the medieval Serbian state. The study of any feature of medieval money – and iconography – is unimaginable without the examination of the historical background of the emergence of money, general monetary flow and market trends of the period. Besides coinage, the iconography and symbolic representations found in the hagio-biographies of the rulers, diplomatic correspondences, monumental paintings, miniatures from the illuminated manuscripts, jewellery – and particularly the sigillographic material closely related to numismatics, both in terms of technology and the same craftsmen who created the seals and signet rings for the rulers and the moulds used for minting of coins – have also been examined. This was the only way to trace the symbolic background of the motifs and the meaning that they conveyed to the contemporary observer. The thesis concludes that the iconography of Serbian medieval coinage was developed under the influences of the market trends and political changes of the time that also included the change of the zone of influences of various monetary systems on the territory of medieval Serbia, reflected in the marked influence of Byzantine, Venetian, Hungarian and – in the age of despotate – Ottoman coinage on the iconography of Serbian coins. As the Ragusans had a significant presence in medieval Serbia as the primary lessees of Serbian customs offices and mints, the iconography of the coinage of the Republic of Ragusa is firmly embedded in the iconography of Serbian coinage. The thesis also concludes that the representation of monarch distributed on Serbian coinage – initially created on the basis of Byzantine ideology – is changed by the time of king and emperor Dusan in accordance with his secular ideas on power and authority to convey an idealized image of a ruler who is a warrior and a knight above all.en
