Razvoj, strukturalne i semantičke osobenosti analitičkog genitiva u engleskom jeziku

Abstract

Ova doktorska disertacija predstavlja morfo-sintaksičko i semantičko ispitivanje karakteristika sintetičkog i analitičkog genitiva i njihov razvoj u engleskom jeziku. Polazište je teorijska pretpostavka da je genitivni marker –‘s u engleskom jeziku flektivni nastavak za padeţ, odnosno, nastavak za kontekstualnu fleksiju. Pošto se u ispitivanom korpusu naišlo na primere grupnog genitiva, kod kojih je marker za genitiv moguće dodati na bilo koju vrstu reči koja se nalazi na kraju fraze, bilo je neophodno da se genitivni marker u engleskom jeziku proglasi klitikom i time je izvršena prva revizija statusa nastavka –‘s. U ispitivanom korpusu pronaĎen je značajan broj primera nezavisnog genitiva i naziva trgovinskih lanaca i banaka, u kojima je genitivni nastavak –‘s leksičko-flektivni, odnosno, moţe se semantički interpretirati kao nastavak sa gramatičkim i leksičkim značenjem, tako da je jedan od zadataka ove disertacije da još jednom ispita status genitivnog markera u engleskom jeziku i da se on proglasi nastavkom za inherentnu fleksiju u pomenutim, veoma specifičnim, slučajevima što dovodi do druge revizije statusa nastavka –‘s u engleskom jeziku. Pored toga, cilj ovog istraţivanja bio je da se ispita razvoj genitiva u engleskom jeziku, sa akcentom na ispitivanju formalnih, značenjskih, i funkcionalnih karakteristika genitiva deadjektivalnih nominala u savremenom engleskom jeziku, kao i na ispitivanje karakteristika partikule of čija semantička interpretacija ukazuje na status genitivnog semi-prefiksa. Metodološki pristup istraţivanja je deskriptivni. Nakon što su različiti oblici genitiva izdvojeni iz korpusa, i klasifikovani prema svojim formalnim, semantičkim i funkcionalnim osobenostima, izvršena je kvalitativna i kvantitativna analiza dobijenih rezultata i njihovo poreĎenje. Rezultati pokazuju da je u savremenom engleskom jeziku sve veća frekvencija kako sintetičkog, tako i analitičkog genitiva deadjektivalnih nominala, da se sintaksičke i semantičke osobenosti genitiva deadjektivalnih nominala poklapaju sa sintaksičkim i semantičkim osobinama genitiva imenice. Rezultati pokazuju da su genitivi deadjektivalnih nominala najfrekventniji u akademskoj prozi i da je analitički genitiv deadjektivalnih nominala frekventniji od sintetičkog oblika u svim registrima.

This doctoral dissertation represents the morpho-syntactic and semantic research on the characteristics of synthetic and analytic genitive, and their development in the English language. The premise is the theoretical assumption that the genitive marker –'s in English is a case suffix, i.e. the suffix for contextual inflextion. Since the analysed corpus contained the examples of the so called ''group'' genitive, in which it is allowed to attach the genitive marker to the end of a nominal phrase, no matter to what class of the word the ending belongs, it was necessary to define the suffix –'s as a clitic, and thus revise the status of the genitive suffix. In addition, the analysed corpus contained a considerable number of examples of the independent genitives and the names of the department stores, banks and companies, in which the genitive suffis –'s is of both lexical and inflective nature, i.e., it can be semantically interpreted as the suffix with both grammatical and lexical meaning. One of the dissertation's tasks was to revise the status of the genitive marker once again and define it as the suffix for inherent inflection in very specific cases, as mentioned above. The aim of this research was to examine the development of the English genitive, with the emphasis on the analysis of formal, semantic and functional characteristics of the genitive of deadjectival nominals in contemporary English and the examination of the preposition ''of'' whose semantic interpretation indicates the status of the genitival semi-prefix. The methodological approach in the study is descriptive. After the classification of various genitive forms from the corpus, according to their formal, semantic and functional characteristics, the obtained data were described in quantitative and qualitative terms. The results are the following: the frequency of both, synthetic and analytic genitive of deadjectival nominals, gradually increases in contemporary English; there is a concurrence between the syntactic and semantic characteristics of the genitive of deadjectival nominals and those of the genitive of nouns in general. Besides, the results show that the genitive of deadjectival nominals is of greatest frequency in academic prose, and that the analytic genitive of deadjectival nominals is more frequent than the sythetic form in all registers.
