Abstract

The present doctoral dissertation explores the relationship between General French and French in health sciences, based on the syntactic and semantic analyses of their respective lexical properties. The goal of the study was to determine the potential diffe-rences in the distribution of lexical properties of General French and French in health sciences, and to explain the reasons for their emergence. The analysis has been conducted on a corpus of approximately 3,800 lexical units in use in the most prominent medical fields: cardiology, oncology, endocrinology, immunology, genetics, as well as in the related fields of pharmacy and chemistry. The theoretical part of the study discusses the general and the specific features of the LSP (Language for Specific Purposes), with a particular emphasis on the language of health sciences. Apart from the historical development, and the definition and termi-nological distinction of concepts, their pragmatic, functional and linguistic characteri-stic...s have been described in more detail. The importance of terminology as a discipline in this field of study has been pointed out; furthermore major theories of terminology and the definition of the terminological unit as their main subject have been identified and outlined. The morphosyntactic analysis, based on the principles inspired by generative grammar, has been directed at determining the frequency of word classes, as well as exploring the structure of the lexical units from the excerpted corpus. The findings have revealed that French in health sciences shows the predominance of the substantival ca-tegory, followed by adjectives, whereas verbs are the least represented. According to structural type, complex lexical units prevail, followed by derivatives, learned compo-unds, whereas simple words are the least present...
