The dissertation Science-fictional upgrading of James Joyce’s Ulysses in Phillip José Farmer’s (anti)utopian novella “Riders of the Purple Wage” focuses on the comparative analysis of two works of fiction already mentioned in the title itself, as well as on the narrative techniques which Farmer used to accomplish this science-fictional upgrading of Joyce’s classic novel. The main hypothesis of the dissertation is in the statement that there is a clear stylistic, thematic and motif-wise resemblance between Farmer’s novella “Riders of the Purple Wage” and Joyce’s Ulysses; but, Joyce’s novel is not degraded and derided by the science fiction upgrading, on the contrary, such literary procedures open the roads for a projection of Ulysses into the future of mankind. The first nine chapters of this dissertation depict the life and work of Philip José Farmer, along with the critical reception he received, and this is followed by the formal, narratological, and content analysis of the science fiction novella “Riders of the Purple Wage”, with the dominant social novum. We used, but also we endeavored to define more accurately, some basic terms necessary for this research, such as: novum, form and content, fabula and sujet. The next six chapters are dedicated to the comparative analysis of Joyce’s Ulysses and Farmer’s “Riders of the Purple Wage”, at four levels: language, content, composition, and metaphysical level. The analysis resulted in our conclusion that the greatest resemblance between the analyzed works is on the language level, yet there are significant similarities on the other three levels as well – content level (the use of comedic elements, psychoanalysis, the presentation of characters, parody, and satire), composition level (usage of narrative strategies and stylistic modeling of the text) and metaphysical level (motifs used in both works, references, allusions, demythologization of mythical patterns, sharp view of dehumanization, usage of epiphany, and a characteristic relation of characters towards art). On the basis of our analysis, we conclude that the novella “Riders of the Purple Wage” is a remarkable artisтic achievement, since, via the upgrading of Ulysses, it demonstrates how Joyce’s mythical transformation of the story of Odysseus can be transferred further on, creatively and originally, into a science fiction and futuristic context, showing what this myth would look like in a strongly utopian but also dystopian future of humanity. The aim of this dissertation is to prove that Farmer’s double negation of the myth, his double decanonization (parody of Joyce’s parody/upgrading) does not mean the creation of an anti-canon nor the negation of tradition, but, rather, means an affirmation of literature, being confirmed afresh through the brilliant science-fictional literary expression, thus extending “Joyce-ism” into the future.en
