Abstract
Ovom se disertacijom istražuje kako govornici srpskog jezika usvajaju sistem engleskih članova i načine izražavanja obilježja odreĎenosti i neodreĎenosti. U radu smo pokušali da rasvijetlimo fenomen odreĎenosti i neodreĎenosti koji se smatra univerzalnom kategorijom ljudskog razmišljanja. Članovi, kao najčešće riječi engleskog jezika, predstavljaju veliku poteškoću svim govornicima čiji maternji jezik ne posjeduje takve elemente. Istraživanjem u ovom radu pokušali smo postići dva cilja: prvo da ispitamo koje teorije su najuticajnije i najpriznatije u objašnjenju ovog fenomena, na koji način je sistem članova predstavljen u udžbenicima i gramatikama, koje sve funkcije i značenja može izražavati i da opišemo najnovije studije i pristupe usvajanju engleskih članova u literaturi koja se bavi nastavom engleskog jezika. Drugi cilj je vezan za istraživanja koja smo sproveli kako bismo rasvijetlili probleme koje studenti imaju pri usvajanju sredstava za izražavanje odreĎenosti i neodreĎenosti ...u engleskom jeziku, tj. članova. U okviru prvog dijela istraživanja provjerili smo našu hipotezu da studenti imaju velikih poteškoća u upotrebi članova te da je procenat ovih grešaka u odnosu na ostale vrste grešaka najveći. Analizirajući greške studenata u obilježavanju kategorije odreĎenosti i neodreĎenosti u više različitih zadataka, ustanovili smo u kojoj mjeri poznaju i služe se pravilima kada koriste članove, koliko su ovladali načinima izražavanja te kategorije i zašto srpski govornici najčešće pristupaju strategiji izbjegavanja člana. U drugom dijelu smo opisali njihov meĎujezik i ustanovili redoslede usvajanja članova i tačnost u korišćenju pri obilježavanju ove semantičkopragmatičke kategorije.

This dissertation investigates the acquisition of the English article system and the ways of expressing definiteness and indefiniteness by Serbian speakers. In this paper, we have tried to shed more light on the phenomenon of definiteness and indefiniteness, which is considered to be a universal category of human thought. Speakers whose native language does not possess such elements have troubles with the correct use of articles as the most commonly used words in English. The aim of this research was two-fold: first to explore which theories were the most influential and the most recognized in clarifying this phenomenon, how articles are presented in course books and grammar books, which functions and meanings they can express and to describe the latest studies and approaches to the acquisition of English articles in ELT. The second aim is directly related to the research that we conducted in order to elucidate the problems that students have while acquiring English articles in express...ing definiteness and indefiniteness. In the first part of this research we have tested our hypothesis that students have great difficulty in article use and the most common types of errors are article errors. Analyzing the students` errors when marking definiteness and indefiniteness in a number of different tasks, we have determined the extent to which they know and use the rules when using articles, how much they have mastered this category and why Serbian speakers usually employ avoidance strategies in article use. In the second part we have described their interlanguage, we have determined article acquisition orders and measured article accuracy and use in marking this semantic-pragmatic category.
