The doctoral dissertation, "Yugoslavia, Italy and the Trieste crisis 1948– 1954." was written based on the documents from the Archives of Yugoslavia, Belgrade Military Archives, Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, the Archive of the Foreign Ministry of Germany, published archival materials and relevant domestic and foreign literature. The dissertation aims to show the Trieste crisis in the broader context of the Yugoslav-Italian relations as through the relations between Yugoslavia and the great powers. The research is based on the study of political-military, economic and cultural relations between Yugoslavia and Italy in the period from 1948. to 1954. In the course of this period, the intensive bilateral and multilateral contacts of Yugoslav, Italian, American, British and French representatives took place with the aim of solving the Trieste crisis. The politicalmilitary relations between Yugoslavia and the Balkan NATO members, Greece and Turkey, were also important for resolving of the Trieste crisis. The international status of the Free Territory of Trieste was an obstacle to the normalizing bilateral relations between Yugoslavia and Italy. The two governments expressed their territorial claims to the free territory of Trieste, diplomatically encouraging great powers to accept such a solution. Both Yugoslav and Italian governments strived to implement their policy on the Free Territory of Trieste. The relations between Yugoslavia and Italy were largely dependent on the big powers political influence in this period, due to the wider international circumstances. Thereby the area of bilateral cooperation was clearly bordered. During the crisis over Trieste, the Yugoslav and Italian governments have tackled various important issues for these two countries relations. There were two groups of issues which regulation was taken over by the two governments when signing the Treaty of Peace. First of all, those were the questions that have arisen as a consequence of war, of which, in the period from 1948-1954. were to be solved the issues of war criminals, division of the Italian fleet, reparations, restitution, optionees. The second part of mutual obligations was the regulation of mutual economic and social relations. As a consequence of the war and unregulated bilateral relations, the reasons for different incidents and tensions in relations between Yugoslavia and Italy have emerged. Because of its international position that Yugoslavia found itself in after the conflict with the Soviet Union, it was forced to accept a dialogue on resolving the Trieste crisis. In the meetings between Yugoslav diplomats and representatives of American, British and French governments there were attempts to reach an agreement with the Italian government. The Western diplomats offered good services to the Yugoslav government through the mediation between Yugoslav and Italian government....en
