Kroz analizu digitalnih ostataka, audio, pisanog i video materijala, i... najviše
posmrtni identitet prolazi kroz proces posmrtnog umiranja, a u kojima dostiže simboličku
digitalnu besmrtnost.
reč o transformaciji tradicionalnih rituala smrti u okviru interneta.
Research looks into the process and phenomenon of death on the internet, answering the
question what is happening to the virtual personal internet identity of the deceased user, ways
in which it continues to be constructed or is constructed from the scratch by the other users.
Through the analysis, we try to see whether postmortem dying or the digital immortality of
the digital identity happens, and which conditions influence the outcome. Concept of the
postmortem dying is the one developed by Serbian anthropologist, Dušan Bandić, who
analyzed the traditional belief that the soul leaves the body and takes its place in the cult of
ancestors during a certain time frame. Using his scheme, research notes the similarities and
how traditional belief mirrors itself in the online sphere when it comes to the death of the
personal digital identity. On the other side, there is a process of achieving digital immortality
present on the internet through the idea of symbolic immortality and prolongat...ion of the
social death. Through the analysis of the digital remains, audio, textual and video material,
and mostly through the in-depth interviews with the internet users who lost someone whose
death was, in a sense, connected to the internet, we see in which cases the virtual identity of
the deceased goes through the process of postmortem dying, or whether it achieves symbolic
digital immortality. The findings at the end show that, depending on the various factors
mentioned in the dissertation, internet space can produce both outcomes, and that
individualization of the process of death, along with the help from online communities and
safe spaces, is what makes the biggest transformation of the traditional rituals of death on the
internet.
