The subject of the doctoral dissertation „The First Serbian Uprising in art and
visual culture of the Principality/Kingdom of Serbia (1842-1918)” is a study of the
mechanisms and processes of introducing and shaping the theme of the First Serbian Uprising
in art and visual culture, in the period from 1842 to 1918, on the territory of the Principality,
and later the Kingdom of Serbia. The mentioned time frame was marked by important
political events, the shift of dynasties in 1858 and 1903, the acquisition of independence in
1878, the proclamation of the Kingdom of Serbia in 1882, the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913 and
the First World War in the period 1914-1918.
In order to present a comprehensive study, several methodological approaches, based on the
experience of contemporary art history as well as various humanistic disciplines, have been
applied in work.
The research is based on the study of works of fine arts and visual culture in the context of
state-political and social ci...rcumstances, followed by the shifts of the Karadjordjević and
Obrenović dynasties and their reflection on the visualization of the First Serbian Uprising.
Special attention was paid to the perception of occurrences and phenomena that influenced
the creation of such works, form and ways of their incorporation into public, residential and
private spaces, in order to create a more complete picture of the topic of Uprising, its
character and function within the frame of visual culture.
The First Serbian Uprising (1804-1813) as the period of the beginning of the Serbian
revolution, from which the modern Serbian state emerged as the greatest heritage, represents
a great and important topic in Serbian art and visual culture of the Principality/Kingdom of
Serbia (1842-1918). The creation and foundation of its image in the cultural memory, during
the XIX century and the first decades of the XX century, contributed to the state-political
situation in the Principality, and later from 1882 in the Kingdom of Serbia, in which the past
and the legacy of the past served as a strong support in building the state and dynastic
identity.
It was precisely the state-political and dynastic circumstances in Serbia, beginning with
Karadjordje's departure from the country with the collapse of the Uprising in 1813, and
especially after his tragic death in Radovanjski Lug in 1817, that influenced the suppression
of the First Serbian Uprising from public communication, i.e., the personalities and events
that marked it...
