Abstract

The epikarst is a part of the karst outcrop that is located within the unsaturated zone and represents a complex point of contact and mixing of unconsolidated material from the terrain surface, remains of carbonate rocks altered by corrosive water, flora and fauna, and their remains, which is partially saturated with groundwater. The correct and complete perception of epikarst, its degree of development and the presence on the limestone terrain can be made with a multidisciplinary approach, with primary detailed hydrogeological research. The study area for the applied multidisciplinary research was the karst massif of Suva Planina Mountain, that is the part of the Carpathian-Balkan mountain range. The results presented in the doctoral dissertation indicate that the groundwater quality of the karst aquifer system of Suva planina Mt. is very good. In addition to favourable natural conditions, the good water quality is also affected by the processes of autopurification, which t...ake place in the underground. The Na-fluorescein dye tracing test determined the velocity of the subsurface flow, while the experiment with contaminant defined the velocity of the pollutant migration and its transformation due to physical and chemical processes with the associated microbiological activity. Experiments in the synthetic model of epikarst have shown that it is possible to simulate the groundwater seepage through epikarst in conditions as natural one at the Peč cave site. The heterogeneity and anisotropy of the epikarst affects flora and fauna, primarily bacteria, which originate from the ground surface and from the soil. The existence of living world in this subsurface layer creates environment in which biochemical processes degrade the contaminant or at least reduce its danger level, also, increasing the overall autopurification potential and the natural protection of the karst aquifer. The results of the research indicate the importance of the epikarst layer in the karst aquifer system, so the removal of this temporal groundwater storage element can directly affect the quality and quantity of groundwater of the karst groundwater.
