The aim of this dissertation is to give an analysis of Nick Cave’s poetics through the prism of the concepts of transgression and transgressiveness. In terms of form, genre and themes, Cave’s work is highly diverse, and transgression turned out to be one of the key features of his writings. At the same time, it provides an opportunity to capture most of his work when interpreting Cave’s poetry and fiction. The introductory chapter of the dissertation deals with the notions of transgression and transgressive literature, taken as a literary mode, which has been clearly present in the literary tradition for a long time. Transgression is analyzed through the notions of evil, abjection, carnivalesque, monstrous, gothic and grotesque, since they are the most frequent concepts of its manifestation. Following is an overview of selected elements which most often define a certain literary discourse as transgressive. Four notions are taken as the key elements of a transgressive discourse: transgressive hero, language of transgression, violence and prominent presence of carnality. The next chapter focuses on Nick Cave’s biography, especially on its parts relevant for this research. After that, the main characteristics of Cave’s poetry are discussed, with a particular interpretation of his own texts which explain his poetic foundations and the influence of The Bible on his work. The following chapters bring a reading of Cave’s poetic and prose writing through the perspective of transgression. Cave’s poems are divided into four groups based on their poetic focus: 1) murder ballads; 2) transgressive love songs; 3) apocalyptic and city songs; 4) songs with elements of mythological and literary parody. The songs belonging to the suggested groups are analyzed, focusing on transgressive elements in their narratives. The penultimate segment of the dissertation is dedicated to Cave’s smaller portion of work, his novels And the Ass Saw the Angel and The Death of Bunny Munro. This chapter looks at the characteristics which define these two narratives as transgressive literary discourses and concludes that their transgressive mode makes them very similar actually, even though they are traditionally perceived as fundamentally different pieces of fiction by critics. The final chapter shortly summarizes proposed ideas and conclusions. It defines the dissertation’s final result: transgression is almost unavoidable in Cave’s poetics, thus becoming the crucial trait which essentially defines its whole artistic nature.en
