The subject of the doctoral dissertation is political communication on social networks and its influence on the political behavior of young people in Serbia. The main functions of political communication – informative, educational and persuasive have been entirely transformed with the phenomenon of social networks. Every user has the opportunity to independently shape their own informative and cognitive environment, as well as to politically influence other users by means of social networks. For that reason, the benefit principle has been taken as a theoretical starting point, which has a significant usage in the current international research on the role of social networks in political communication. An important theoretical aspect is related to the concept of political behavior. In this study, communication activities are also part of the concept of political communication, which have been neglected in the classical definitions of political participation. Indubitably, activities of this kind are an important segment of the contemporary political behavior, which is the reason why they must be taken into consideration in the research in this field. The primary goal of the empirical research we conducted was to determine whether the use of social networks based on fulfilling daily needs for information, communication and entertainment can cause changes in the political behavior of young people in Serbia. From the aforementioned purpose, two research questions have arisen; the first – Does the use of social networks for the purpose of fulfilling users’ personal needs (information, entertainment, connecting and communication with others) affect the political behavior of young people in Serbia? and the second – Do young people in Serbia use specific opportunities and different tools of different social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube) to create political content?. Based on the research questions we presented the fundamental hypothesis: In addition to fulfilling users’ personal needs (informing, entertainment, connecting and communication with others), using social networks leads to more intense political behavior of young people in Serbia and three supporting hypotheses: 1) use of social networks leads to a higher level of information and knowledge about politics of young population in Serbia, 2) use of social networks leads to a political engagement of young people in the online environment and in real life, 3) specific and simple (user-friendly) tools offered by Facebook, Twitter and Youtube encourage young people in Serbia to create political content. The survey was conducted on a sample of 554 young people on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. The respondents were the students of the three largest universities in the Republic of Serbia (University of Niš, University of Belgrade and University of Novi Sad). In the field research, we used a multi-segment questionnaire, more precisely, the paper and pencil interviewing that was adapted to group assignment. For statistical data interpretation, the “SPSS” program was used, as well as the statistical procedures which enabled an adequate check of the presented hypotheses. The results of the survey suggested that the use of social networks for the purpose of fulfilling users’ personal needs for general information, entertainment and communication with other users of these platforms does not positively influence their political behavior. In addition, it does not lead to a higher level of political information, greater knowledge of politics, political events and political engagement in the online and offline environment. Also, the findings indicate that a significant number of youth who participated in the survey do not use specific opportunities and different tools offered by the social networks for creating and publishing political content. Regarding the aforementioned answers to the research questions, which emerged from the fact that none of the presented hypotheses has been confirmed, we concluded that political communication on social networks in Serbia does not have an adequately developed informative, educative and persuasive function. Furthermore, there is an unequivocal conclusion that social networks in Serbia are not an entirely developed field for political communication and presently it is impossible to expect that the use of social networks can instigate significant changes in the political behavior of young people in Serbia.en
