Proizvodni inženjer obično ima široko znanje o inženjerskim praksama i svestan je izazova vezanih za proizvodnju. Pored ovoga, nauka o materijalima kombinuje svojstva, načine pripreme i strukturu materijala i stvara matricu znanja koja omogućava uspešno oblikovanje materijala.
