The aim of the thesis is to show the transformations of John Steinbeck’s literary work in the transposition to the “big screen“. In this paper we rely on the recent adaptation theory in which film adaptation is primarily perceived as an autonomous film work of equal status as the original. New adaptation theory rejects “fidelity“ to the original as a criterion for evaluation, since the adaptation process involves the transposition from one sign system to another. Relying on the theories of Linda Hutcheon, George Bluestone, Robert Stam, Deborah Cartmell, Linda Cahir and many others, adaptation is seen as a formal entity and product, as well as a transposition of a certain literary work considering the change of media, the change of genre or context, the change of one’s point of view within a new interpretation. Adaptation is a creative process that implies a new interpretation and an act of creating new artwork. During this creative process, the basic premise is to preserve a story taken from the original literary work, but at the same time to create new perspective which will successfully communicate with the audience. Adaptation is at the same time a form of intertextuality, because in the process of perception, we have different experiences as audience of film media compared to literary work. Adaptation has many layers and carries within itself the repetition of the original work, as well as multiple variations of new artistic creation...en
