Medijatizacijski pristup istražuje međuigru medijskih i komunikacionih promena, s jedne strane, i društvenih i kulturnih promena s druge strane. Umreženo društvo omogućava sociološko utemeljenje za proučavanje medijatizacije i kritičko razmatranje problema simboličke i socijalne dominacije i uloge medija u reprodukciji moći.
Mediatization research is concerned with theorising the interplay between media and communication change on the one hand, and social and cultural change on the other hand. The goal is to find the media’s role in this complex interrelationship. This nexus of influences has been examined by many authors, and mediatization researchers have relied on the findings of sociologists such as Anthony Giddens, Pierre Bourdieu or Bruno Latour. Manuel Castells is a researcher focused on the relationship between media and society. This dissertation seeks to reconstruct his view of mediatization process. His and mediatization research both seek to capture the role of the media in the society, and both have been accused of apparent lack of critical perspective. The dissertation examines this in two ways. First, by examining existing critical theories, such as Frankfurt school, poststructuralism and cultural studies, as well as medium theory, in order to critically conceptualize the interplay of the media, society and culture. The dissertation then moves to the analysis of Castells’ theory. Following four major themes of media studies (text, audience/users, technology and political economy), the dissertation proposes three elements of media logic (symbolic, social and techno-logic), and underlines the need for the context sensitive research. The network society provides the sociological foundation for the mediatization process. It will show its critical potential when it comes to symbolic and social domination and the role of media in the reproduction of power. In the introductory chapter, I identified the main features of Castells’ work and mediatization theory, described the research problem and proposed a working hypothesis. The second chapter discusses the current mediatization research: the institutional, cultural and material approach. In third chapter I examined Frankfurt school’s critical theory, postructuralism (Baudrillard, Lyotard, Deleuze, Derrida), British cultural studies (Wiliams, Hall) and medium theory (Innis, McLuhan, Kittler), in order to upgrade the understanding of the interplay of media, culture and society, and prepare the theoretical framework for the examination of Castells’ contribution to 7 mediatization. In fourth chapter I discuss Castells’ view of the relation between the state, civil society and the market, which is essential for understanding the media’s role. Then I examine the fusion of communication technology, culture, economy and politics. His view of globalization will provide the basis for analysis of corporate multimedia system, its oligopolistic but dynamic nature. The chapter introduces the concept of mass self-communication and analyses the tension between corporate and user domains. The focus of fifth chapter is the culture of real virtuality, based on the convergence of information and culture industry, news and social media, that embody a great “historical supertext” where all cognitive patterns are connected. Media are at the center of this symbolic power. The chapter examines the features of this culture, the worldview that is produced by the media, as well as the users themselves, their creativity or alienation and the possibility of resistance. Last two parts examine the mediatization of politics and the relation between identity and media use. Sixth chapter deals with the possibility of change induced by alternative social actors. It shows that the greatest social and cultural change was produced by the most powerful actors, like in the case of Iraq war propaganda. It shows the media changes on the level of mediation, the relation of corporate media and the political actors, as well as the rise of partisan media. Then the chapter turns to social movements such as Occupy Wall Street or ecological organizations. Occupy is compared to the Tahrir square events, in relation to news media role, the power of mass-self and face-to-face communication. The conclusion of the dissertation provides in detail the critical model of mediatization, as well as highlights the Castells’ contribution and relevance for understanding the mediatization process.en
