The christological thought of the significant bishop of the ancient Roman Orthodox Patriarchate, the thought of St. Leo The Great, decisively influenced the preservation of Orthodox Christology and the belief of the Church in the Incarnation of God the Word Who is perfect God and perfect Man. This Holy Father of the universal Church, with his theology and mutual cooperation with St. Flavian of Constantinople prepared the way for the summoning of the Chalcedonian Ecumenical Council in 451 A. D., which the Orthodox Church really needed in order to express in its own theological language, and to provide, the theological victory over the heresy of eutychianism and monophysitsm. The Confession of faith of St. Flavian of Constantinople in 448. A. D. and, especially, the theological thought of Leo The Great about the God-man Jesus Christ represent the theological basis for the Chalcedonian theological belief. The doctoral thesis with its intentionality is directed towards the clarification of Christological thought of St. Leo the Great and its ontology which represents and describes the area of Christian life and the topic of man as an eternal human being and person, as well as towards the clarification of mutual cooperation between the Roman and the Constantinopolitan Church with the aim of preserving authentic Orthodox Christology. The convenience and suitability of this theme is justified by the fact that in the current theological science there is still no detailed study that would include such a systematic presentation of the personality of this great theological writer of the fifth century, in terms of explicit presentation of his Christology, which is a natural extension of the Christology of Saint Cyril of Alexandria, and which connects the teachings of the Church with the manner of our existence as Christians today, that is with Christian ontology. Therefore, the thesis primarily focuses on that scientific field simultaneously presenting the image of mutual cooperation between the imperial government and the church hierarchy in the area of care for the purity of the Orthodox Christian faith. Because the Person of God the Word (Logos) ensures that the human nature can be in union with the Divine nature - 8 unconfusedly and indivisibly, the dissertation, therefore, sets as its primary task to describe the ontology of Christian doctrinal belief about the God-man: which ontological and ecclesiastical issues are being revealed by the Christological thought and theology of the Chalcedonian Council where the Christology of Leo the Great was of crucial importance? It is so important to point out in this study that the union of Divine and human nature is enabled thanks to the Hypostatis (Person) of the pre - existing and eternal Son of God. The Person - Hypostasis of Christ is the guarantee of this union because His Hypostasis is a concrete eternal being who is the holder of the existence of nature, and here it is important to say that what happened with human nature in Christ (union with the Divine nature) has ontological implications for all people: all people have the possibility, in Christ's eternal Person, to become the sons of God with the Divine gift for eternal existence and immortality (as Saint Maximus the Confessor pointed out – it is God’s wish that the Mystery of the Incarnation of the Divine Word can be manifested in every human being, PG 91, 1084 cd). Therefore, it is very important that the thesis emphasizes also that ontological moment, that mankind (together with the nature) achieves immortality in Christ, and the Hypostasis of the God-man Jesus Christ is a guarantee of that ontological status; in Christ’s Hypostasis, two natures are united - Divine and human, unconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably. Because the main topic of the theology of Leo The Great is the theme of the Incarnation of the Son of God and the salvation of mankind, therefore there should be noted that the Incarnation of Christ precisely enables a man to exist forever as an eternal and concrete saved human being in the same Resurrected Christ, because the Holy Spirit makes man become, in Resurrected Christ, an eternal and saved person liberated from mortality, with the gift of eternal life and immortality. Consequently, the final implications of the doctoral thesis will present the importance of Chalcedonian Christology for modern man and the world, because it is required to preach the faith of The Fourth Ecumenical Council in a contemporary contextual way, keeping the event of the Christ’s Resurrection as hermeneutical key, so that the man of today could understand in the best possible way, the need for the Savior Who is true God-man or incarnated God, in the concept of Christian teaching about the salvation of mankind, the victory over death and the gift of immortality as an expression of the unconditional love of God.en
