The objective of this doctoral dissertation is to analyze the activity of the Triestine cultural circle as it relates to the South Slavs. This analysis will provide insight into the activity of the whole circle of cultural workers – those referred to with the syntagma of ―Triestine cultural circle‖ – who were in contact with the South Slavs in the middle of the 19th century. The cultural and literary treasures of the South Slavs who are often defined by the historical ethnonym ―Illyrians‖ were the source of inspiration for the works of the Triestine circle. These cultural workers first came together in support of Giuseppe Mazzini and Niccolò Tommaseo; the axis of this socio-cultural phenomenon eventually came to consist of Francesco Dall‘Ongaro and PacificoValussi, and it included Antonio Madonizza, Antonio Somma, Giuseppe Vollo, Caterina Percoto, Heinrich Stieglitz, Ivan August Kaznaĉić, Orsatto Pozza as well as others. The activities of this group, however, were not limited to the city of Trieste as the members were also active in Venice, especially during the two-year revolutionary period from 1848 to 1849, since the anti-Austrian struggle of the Italian patriots was linked specifically to Venice, and not to Trieste. The methodology employed is that of a detailed observation of the relations between the various national and ethnic groups (in Italy and the Balkans) within an interdisciplinary framework that focuses on Italian-South Slav historical and cultural ties, beginning with the essential studies of Arturo Cronia (1958), Joţe Pirjevec (1977), Nikša Stipĉević (1979), Mate Zorić (1989, 1992, 1999, 2014), Mirjana Drndarski (1989). The analysis of archival historiographic and literary sources, (un)published original texts, (un)published numerous authors‘ papers and often anonymous articles in periodical publications, and comparative reading of (un)published correspondence, deals with the literary and cultural activity of the intellectuals and so the existing studies of Italian-South Slavic, and especially Italian-Serbian cultural ties in the 19th century are complemented by additional research results and data on Italian-South Slavic cultural relations in the 19th century. This study covers the entire 19th century and is divided into two parts: one concentrates on the role played by the Triestine circle in establishing the canonic approach to the South Slav and Serbian literary reality, and the other focuses instead on the historical conditions that were the backdrop to the interrelations between these cultures. In many cases the literary and the historical overlap and intermingle so that it is not possible to make net distinctions between them. In addition to the sections on literary and cultural activities in Trieste, the main themes related to the cultural intelligence of the Trieste and Venetian bay were analyzed within the context of the Italian nationalist political and social movement of the 19th century, which is known as the Risorgimento. Expected results and conclusions are closely related to the heuristic approach, which refers to the discovery of new facts and knowledge. In the approach to this topic, the starting point was the frequently asked question of whether there was any contact between the so-called ―Obradović circle‖, i.e. Dositej Obradović‘s associates who stayed in Trieste in the decades between the two centuries, and ―Tommaseo‘s circle‖ of associates who were active in Trieste in the first half of the 19th century. The results of the study show that, despite decades of a communicative ―vacuum‖ between the two groups, there was essentially a ―crossing‖ point between the two circles, and that Obradović‘s personality was crucial to this ‗crossing‘ at the beginning of the 19th century, while Vuk Stefanović Karadţić‘s activity attracted the attention of literates a little bit later, in the middle of the 19th century. The main results of the research, however, relate to the observation and analysis of the network of cooperation between groups on the two sides of the Adriatic, which was significant and decisive for the fate of the South Slavs and Serbs in the 19th century. The history of this communication includes the names of many now forgotten figures who played important parts in the historical and cultural events that led to the formation of nations in Europe. In retracing the formation of this network of cultural workers in Trieste and Venice, it is also possible to reconstruct a map of the political conspiracies and their movement across Europe that had their epicenter in the Triestine and Venetian bays. This dissertation therefore completes the picture of the Italian-South Slavic and Serbian relations, which will also contribute to the knowledge of the presence of Serbian culture on Italian soil, as well as the role of Italian patriots in historical events that took place among the Serbs around the middle of the 19th century, and above all the formation of the nation of South Slavs, then known as Yugoslaviаen
