Abstract: Successful design of steel structures depends to a great extent on the knowledge of the mechanical characteristics of the used materials. For structures that are exposed to impact loads, it is necessary to have dynamic properties, which can differ significantly in certain materials in relation to quasi-static characteristics determined by standard methods. Successful determination of dynamic characteristics implies the development and testing of new experimental methods, depending on the desired applications. The development of complex steel structures, which involves the use of the process of connecting parts by the welding process, is further conditioned by knowledge of the behaviour of welded joints and their influence on the rest of the construction. The complexity of determining dynamic characteristics influences the availability of data in the literature, at the same time increasing doubt in their trustiness. About that, the development of a testing device for materials and a methodology for determining specific parameters describing the dynamic behaviour of materials represents a justified aspiration of all laboratories. Research of the developments and analysis of modern solutions for dynamic material testing, within the Center for Engineering Software and Dynamic Testing of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences in Kragujevac, a built-in tensile Hopkins bar was also designed. With its use, together with the servo-hydraulic device, the necessary conditions have been obtained for determining the parameters of the material models which take into account the variable strain rates. This doctoral dissertation includes the methodology of experimentally determining the parameters of Johnson-Cook's material model. The determination of the parameters involved the implementation of a series of experiments at room and elevated temperatures at different strain rates. Using modern optical measurement systems, the obtained results are the basis for precise determination of parameters that describe the behaviour of materials. Verification of results, repetition of experiments using the finite element method enables their practical application in solving concrete problems. An example of the practical use of the achieved results of the test and the implemented methodology relates to the problem of solving the anti-mine protection, that is, on the reduction of the influence of the explosion wave that operates on a combat military vehicle. The extremely dynamic behaviour of the vehicle structure, as well as the fact that the construction technology is based on the welding process, are the most influential factors for the purpose of preserving the integrity of the structure. Shown and the developed methodology represent an important step towards the system approach to the design and optimization of welded steel structures that are exposed to dynamic loads. Its use in the future will have a positive impact on the development of military and auto industry in the Republic of Serbia.en
