A centuries-long inferiority of females caused demands for the female rights to
education, employment, for their legal status and wages to be equal to those of men
during 19th
Studies of the 110 years of the history of the Military Frontier pointed out the
need and made it possible to follow further events in the region, with a particular
emphasis on certain issues. The period after the abolition of the Banat Military Frontier
was marked by drastic actions taken by the Hungarian government and by the
consequences of the drift in the Serbian National Freethinkers’ Party, but with the hope
that the Kingdom of Serbia would become Serbian Piedmont. Therefore, although the
focal point of this research paper is the analysis of schools for female children, it was
inevitable that its goal should also be the female role in development of national
awareness, and not only the educational institutions for women or the female role in
society. In Serbian communities in Hungary, patriotism appears to... have been a stronger
motive in emphasizing the need to educate women than were the arguments of
European feminist movements.
century. In the Habsburg monarchy, the road to fulfilling some of these
demands was facilitated by the fact that primary education of female children had been
compulsory since the reforms introduced by the Empress Maria-Theresa of Austria, and
also by the fact that demographically heterogeneous society was in favour of female
participation in public life. For the Serbs in Hungary, the new role of women was
primarily influenced by the establishment of higher girls’ schools, amongst which was
the Serbian Higher Girls’ School in Pančevo. This educational institution was founded
in 1874, following the example of the Higher Girls’ School in Belgrade, which was
founded by Prince Mihailo Obrenovic in 1863. The foundation of the school in Pančevo
ensued immediately after the abolition of the Banat Military Frontier and it is indirectly
connected with this historical event.
Overviews of general and the national history, the size of the state and society,
as well as of the thin line between public and private life are all necessary elements in a
study of educational facilities, and they also predetermine our expectations with regard
to the education of female children in the southern part of Austrian-Hungarian Empire.
The existence of educational institutions for female children also had an impact on
modernization of the former Frontier region, on the daily family life in South Banat and
the leisure time spent enjoying art. An attempt at a comprehensive approach required a
stratified research, varying in types of sources and even in scientific disciplines. The
wealth and availability of material preserved in the Historical Archives of Pančevo, in
the Town Hall archives, many schools, associations as well as in several collections
made this research possible. Material from the Town Hall archives and the school
archives of the Historical Archives in Bela Crkva, which was another military
community of the Banat Military Frontier, was also used. Other sources of great value
were those from the Archives of the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences in Sremski
Karlovci, the Archives of Vojvodina, the Archives of the Serbian Academy of Arts and
Sciences, the Archives of Serbia, etc. The research of the daily press proved to be of
special value, as well as of women’s magazines, two of which – Posestrima and
Srpkinja were published in Pančevo, which not only included topics on the traditional
role of women, but on female education, their social status, raising children and suffrage
as well. The publications used in the course of this research combined historical sources
with works on the history of education and pedagogy, and partly on anthropology and
sociology. The time span from 1874 until 1918 encompassed the existence of the Banat
Military Frontier, European influences, the development of the educational system in
Austrian-Hungarian Empire, which influenced the neighbouring Serbia, girls’ schools
and similar institutions, biographies of individuals and the impact of those credited with
the success of those schools which later continued to exist in the Kingdom of SCS
(Yugoslavia).
The Banat Military Frontier represented the eastern part of the Austrian Military
Frontier, formed when the border between the Habsburg monarchy and the Ottoman
Empire (as determined by the Treaty of Belgrade in 1739) was positioned on the
Danube downstream from Belgrade. The prevailing Serbian population was in a unique
position between its motherland Serbia and their fellow citizens of various nationalities
in the Province, who were all frontiersmen. Demilitarisation ensued in the period from
1872-73, but South Banat kept certain specific characteristics even after coming under
the jurisdiction of the Hungarian government. Some of those characteristics, such as the
preserved heritage of enlightenment and the advanced educational system, the
developed economy, the abolition of single-household cooperatives and the right to
participate in the election for the Hungarian parliament, enhanced the female position in
the society.
