Root nodules of legume plants are an important source of bacteria that can improve plant growth. In this research, 152 bacterial isolates were obtained from root nodules of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and bird´s-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) and 14% of alfalfa and 23% of bird´s-foot trefoil isolates nodulated appropriate plants during reinoculation. The higher percentage of alfalfa isolates produced siderophores, while the ability to solubilise phosphates and to produce indole acetic acid was prevalently represented in bird´s-foot trefoil isolates. Antifungal activity was recorded for 17 isolates, with isolate B. mojavensis L3 as the most effective against examined Fusarium species. Genetic characterization of isolates showed that non-rhizobial isolates from both plant species mostly belong to the Bacillus genus. Rhizobial isolates from alfalfa belonged to the Sinorhizobium (Ensifer) and from bird´s-foot trefoil to Mesorhizobium genus. Pot experiments showed that Mesorhizobium sp. isolates (U1C, 754 and 631oz), tolerant to pH 5, increased the yield of bird´s-foot trefoil in acid soil, with the optimal content of micro- and macroelements in plant biomass. Isolates B. megaterium DZK1BH and Mesorhizobium sp. 631oz positively affected the growth of bird´s-foot trefoil, orchardgrass and their mixture, also in acid soil. A field experiment showed the positive effect of isolates S. meliloti L4 and B. megaterium DLK2Eh on the yield of alfalfa, orchardgrass and their mixture in soil with increased concentration of heavy metals (Ni, Cr and Pb). Research of bacterial diversity within the root nodules of bird´s-foot trefoil and alfalfa in Serbia indicated the presence of autochthonous strains with good potential for improving plant growth, especially in soils of low productive characteristics.en
