To indicate the significance and function of the reader`s emotional response in the process of reception of a literary work, after a brief historical overview of literary theoretical texts, in which the matter emotions in literature is the theme, we will focus on contemporary narratological research, and especially on the poetics of Patrick Colm Hogan, who is considered the founder of affective narratology, and Per Thomas Andersen, Norwegian literary historian, who researched the emotional structure of the story. We will reassess the most important notions of classical narratology, taking into account the emotional response to the literary work which was neglected in the course of introducing and defining it in the scope of the classical narratology. A significant role in the contemporary narratological discourse on emotions in literature has phenomena such as empathy, identification and immersion in the world of storytelling which occur as a reaction to the emotional structure of the ...story. For this reason, we will offer a method in this paper in which the emotional structure of the story and the emotional response do not observe partially, which corresponds to the very experience of reading in the process during which aesthetic feeling is aroused. The new methodological approach to the study of the poetics of
the emotional response in literature can contribute to an improved interpretation of literary works, but also the methodology of teaching Serbian language and literature.
